RIBS: Gamble & Huff, part 2

Gamble & Huff, part 2

Trying to do justice to the catalog of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in a single podcast mix is like trying to unring a bell, it just can’t be done.

Ever since their first hit song in 1967 “Expressway To Your Heart” by the blue-eyed soul group the Soul Survivors these prolific wrters, arrangers and producers have been cranking out songs and albums that have become the soundtrack to many of our lives.

So, here is part #2 of our look back at Philly Soul, a.k.a. TSOP, a.k.a. “The Sound of Philadelphia”!

RIBS: Gamble & Huff, part 1

The Sound of Philadelphia

Berry Gordy is to Motown and Detroit what Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff are to Philadelphia International Records (PIR) and the ‘City of Brotherly Love’. Motown may have ruled Soul music scene in the 60’s but Philly Soul gave them a run for their money in the 70s and, in many minds, blew right past them.

This is part #1 of our look back at the house that Gamble and Huff built: “The Sound of Philadelphia”…

RIBS: Even More Randy Crawford-2020

There are a lot of songstresses that I love to listen to. And this lady ranks right there near the top of that list. Like many others, I first became acquainted with Ms. Crawford when she belted out the vocals on The Crusaders’ mega-hit “Street Life” back in 1979. While as a solo artist she has never had a song in the Billboard Top 100 here in the United States, Randy has been much more successful in Europe where she’s had five Top 20 hits in the UK as well as six UK Top 10 albums.

I’ve featured her music in two other RIBS mixes over the years. The first one in a “Triple-Play” mix alongside Patrice Rushen and Stephanie Mills, and a follow-up to that mix entitled “More Randy Crawford”. I’ll see if I can re-post those efforts here soon.
UPDATE: Here is the link to the “More Randy Crawford” mix.

In the meantime, let’s envelope ourselves in the sweet vocalizations of Randy Crawford… even more!
