RIBS TPTD: Earth, Wind & Fire, part 1…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, podcasts/mixes, soul
I love Earth, Wind & Fire!
They are definitely among those groups that are “one of the cornerstones of the foundation of the Soundtrack of My Life”. I’ve been meaning to get around to doing an all EWF mix for quite a while now, but one thing or another kept getting in the way. AAMOF, my original plans for this Labor Day holiday weekend was to do a RIBS “5 mixes in 5 days” mix-a-thon featuring Maurice and the boys. However, life has gotten in the way of those grandiose plans so I’m cutting back and offering up at least two and, if time permits, a third EWF mix to take us through the weekend.
Now hopefully you do know who Earth, Wind & Fire is. This is one of those mega-supergroups that not only has been around for almost 40 years, but has crossed over and had hit songs on both the soul/R&B and pop charts. Not too mention having toured worldwide and having an international fan base. However, just in case you are not that familiar with the group (damn, where have you been? {smile}) you can check out their bio here on The Official Earth, Wind & Fire Website.
While I have many, many, many memories of Earth, Wind & Fire and their music there are two that stand out and that I never fail to think of when I hear an EWF song. The first one is from my freshman year in college. It was a Friday or a Saturday night as I recall and we had just found out that the new EWF album “Gratitude” had been released and was now in the record store (yes, this was BC/BI [before cellphones/before iTunes]). Problem was the store closed in less than an hour and we were a good 45 minutes or more away by subway (none of us Freshmen were allowed to have cars on campus back then). Well, about 8 of us rushed out, jumped on the train and just got to the store with about 10 minutes to spare before it closed. Whew! Needless to say it was an Earth, Wind & Fire 24/7 in the dorms THAT weekend.
My other fond memory is the EWF concert in Madison Square Garden I attended during Senior year in high school. I had only been a licensed driver for a short time (a few months) when this concert was held and Mom did not want me driving to New York. No way no how! So, we told her that we took the train (*wink, wink* {smile}) Also, the “That’s The Way Of The World” album had recently been released and I remember how beautiful “Reasons” sounded, live in MSG with Darlene Franklin by my side (my sweetheart in high school). That was our song. I always think of Darlene when I hear it.
Wow, I could go on and on just about all day talking to you about my Earth, Wind & Fire memories! But that’s not really what you came here for. OK, time to get to the music, as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: Duos & Duets, part 1…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey! Good to see you again. I’ve got something really nice on the RIBS buffet table for ya this week.
One of the musical things I’ve always been very fond of are Duos (2-person groups) and Duets (solo artists that collaborate on a single song or, in some cases, an entire album). So I decided to pull a few of my favorites together and whip them up for a RIBS mix. Problem is I was having some trouble at first coming up enough songs for a full mix, so I put out an A.P.B. on Twitter to see if anyone of the wonderful folks in my community had some suggestions. As usual they came through, and in one instance came through BIG TIME!
At this time, before I start rambling on and on {smile}, I would like to send out a heartfelt “Thank You!” to Trelly for her help, assistance and inspiration in preparing the RIBS this week. AAMOF, I’ve given her the title of Co-Chef for this mix. This lady sent me an extensive list of songs and artists that really got me going in the right direction. BTW, if you are an up and coming and/or independent artist or group you need to get to know this lady. Trelly is the co-founder of One Nation Under The Soul Shack (ONUTSS) an indie soul promotion company. Check them out. Highly Recommended!
Also, let me send “greetings and salutations” to another Twitter contributor to the D&D mix for this week, SoulUK. If you are looking for an interesting site with quality information about soul music, the Soul:UK website is well worth a visit.
You know I got so energized by the song suggestions I was getting from my online Fam that I really started digging around in my collection and researching things online at a feverish pitch. But, I think I may have gone a little overboard though. You see, when I finally stopped and analyzed all of the music I found out I had over 8 hours worth of music. Oh boy! Since a single mix (that will fit on a CD) is only 80 minutes, that would mean that a lot of good stuff would have to be left out. I really didn’t want to do that so I thought it would be a good idea to have a “Duos & Duets” day on RIBS every month (at least for the rest of the year) so we could get a listen to all of this great music. Trelly agreed {smile} and it was decided that the D&D mix will be a regular feature on RIBS every last Thursday of the month.
OK! Let’s get on to the music, as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: More Randy Crawford…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey, welcome back, again. Another week (O.K., O.K., it’s actually been 2 weeks) and another edition of RIBS… a.k.a. “Rhythms In Black Satin”… a.k.a. “The Taste of Music to Satisfy Your Soul!” {smile}
Anyway… I have a confession to make, I’m suffering from an addiction. No, not THAT kind! (geez, what kind of a person do you think I am? On second thought, do me a favor, don’t answer that question {smile}) O.K. now, where was I… oh yeah, my confession. Yep, I have to confess I am hopelessly hooked/addicted/over the edge and I’m not exactly sure when it will end.
Actually, maybe some of you fine music lovers have suffered from the same thing I am currently experiencing. As a matter of fact, I’m sure you have. Alright, let me explain. You see sometimes when I’m futzing around in the RIBS kitchen having a good ol’ time mixing up this and mixing up that for the latest recipe, I get hooked on one of the ingredients. And even after the RIBS come out of the oven and are placed on the buffet table for the week, I still have a craving for one particular ingredient I used to make those RIBS with. I just can’t seem to get enough of it, no matter how much I consume.
This is what has been happening to me for the past couple of weeks. If you recall, two weeks ago I cooked up a very tasty batch of RIBS (IMHO) that featured Patrice Rushen, Stephanie Mills & Randy Crawford. Ever since then I’ve fallen in love with Randy Crawford all over again (just like I did when I first heard her on the Crusaders’ smash hit “Street Life” back in 1979!) It got so bad that while listening to the Patrice-Stephanie-Randy mix I found myself skipping over the Stephanie and Patrice cuts repeatedly to listen to the Randy Crawford songs in the mix. Oh boy!
Well, in an effort to cure myself of this addiction or, even better, to get you addicted also so you can “suffer” along with me {smile} this week I just had to cook up a complete mix with just Randy on it. Ahhhhhhh, I just love this woman’s voice and enjoy listening to her sing.
So… as Diana so eloquently put it, “If there’s a cure for this, I don’t want it!” Join me and let us “suffer” along together as I present to you…

Hey, welcome back to another edition of Rhythms In Black Satin… a.k.a. “RIBS”! Thank you for stopping by and letting me share some of my musical interests with you.
Life over at the RIBS kitchen has been a little… um, “interesting” (yeah, that’s a good word to use) lately. Not bad stuff mind you, but not entirely good stuff… just “interesting” stuff that has to be dealt with. I’m sure some of you out there know exactly what I mean, the rest of you, well, if you live long enough then you’ll know too. {smile}
Well, it’s been a while but today’s mix is in the traditional RIBS “Triple Play Thurs-Day” format… take three music artists, mix ‘em up, throw ‘em in the oven, bake on low to medium heat over several hours (basting often and liberally, of course) and when the timer goes off we have a nice, tender, tasty mix of RIBS! As we like to say ‘round here, it’s the “Taste of music, to satisfy your soul.”
Our ingredients today are three ladies that were hot back in the late 70’s and throughout most of the 80’s. Unfortunately, like a lot of our great soul music, you don’t here a lot about or from these three today. However, they are still with us and going strong and I thought I would take a look back at their body of work and bring it to your attention.
Our RIBS TPTD trio today is…
O.K., I’ve rambled enough, time to get to the music. Remember, when it comes to the RIBS… eat all you want, I’ll just make more! {smile}

RIBS TPTD: “Send Me An Angel”…

Whew!
Man, oh man… what a wacky couple of weeks it has been. I mean, I’ve been around long enough to understand that the world is crazy place, no surprise there. But the past couple weeks it seems like the crazy has been on overdrive. We’ve lost so many good people and in such rapid succession, it’s like nothing I’ve can ever remember experiencing before in my lifetime.
Recently we lost:
Koko Taylor (blues singer)
David Carradine (actor [Kung Fu, Kill Bill])
Ed McMahon (TV show host [Star Search] and announcer [The Tonight Show])
Farrah Fawcett (actress [Charlie’s Angels]))
Michael Jackson (singer [Jackson 5/The Jacksons/solo])
Fayette Pinkney (singer [The Three Degrees])
Billy Mays (TV pitchman)
Karl Malden (actor [The Streets of San Francisco])
and on Saturday July 4, 2009 while enjoying the holiday weekend word came down that Steve McNair former NFL quarterback with the Tennessee Titans was found shot to death in an apparent murder/suicide (at least that’s the early word being released at the time of writing this early in the morning on Sunday July 5th)
My prayers go out to the friends, fans and family of all of the above.
{sigh} So… at this time I figured we all could use a break. I figured we all could use some help to try and get us through these difficult days. Sometimes you just can’t (or shouldn’t) handle things all by yourself. It’s at times like this that maybe, just maybe we should turn our thoughts to the sky and ask the Almighty to please…

RIBS TPTD: Michael Jackson, Interpretations & Covers…
Filed under: Michael Jackson, R&B, R.I.P., RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, podcasts/mixes, soul
This is the 3rd and final part (final for now that is, I have a couple of ideas for another MJ mix for a future date, most likely around his birthday in August) of our 3-part Michael Jackson tribute mix here on RIBS. I like to think of them collectively as “Memories of Michael”. In case you missed them here are the links to part 1, Michael Jackson, R.I.P. and part 2, Michael Jackson, Ballads & Love Songs.
For this mix I wanted to do something a little different. As I mentioned in the post for part 1, I know that over the past week (and probably for the next couple until MJ is laid to rest) you’ve been inundated (more like saturated {smile}) with Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 music on the radio and TV. The problem is that these commercial mediums have no creativity any more. While their intentions may be good, mostly all they are playing are the same 10-20 MJ/J5 songs that we are already well familiar with. Come on, play along with me here… how many times during the past 9 days have you heard the following songs:
- P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)
- Billie Jean (O.K., have to admit I never get tired of this one!)
- Thriller
- Rock With You
- Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough
- Beat It
- Got To Be There
- Never Can Say Goodbye
- ABC
- Dancing Machine
- The Love You Save
- Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
- Man In The Mirror
- Human Nature
- Bad
See what I mean? Nodding your head in agreement while reading that list weren’t you? {smile}
Now please don’t get me wrong, I LOVE these songs. As I mentioned previously MJ’s music is a large part of the “Soundtrack of My Life”. I just think that if you are going to honor what is arguably the most gifted entertainer in our lifetime then you need to dig a little deeper into the catalog to present a fuller picture of his talent.
Fortunately that is what many of us music podcasters do. We dig deeper. We set aside the very familiar and well known songs and we pull out the little known and/or lesser played tracks that we feel you would enjoy just as much as the monster hits.
So… now that I got all of that off my chest {smile}, this mix focuses on cover versions that Michael and/or the Jackson 5 did of other artists’ songs AND MJ/J5 songs covers by other artists. For example, the playlist includes the J5 doing La La (Means I Love You) originally by the Delfonics, and Stand! and I Want To Take You Higher by Sly and the Family Stone. On the other side I have a lovely version of The Lady In My Life by Silk, a reggae version of Don’t Stop till You Get Enough by Derrick Laro And Trinity, Weird Al Yankovic doing his classic parodies Eat It and Fat, and the crown jewel of the mix (IMHO) a cover/interpretation of Smooth Criminal by Carlos Santana!
And…don’t mean to beat a dead horse but if you want the best MJ/J5 information and commentary, without any of the negativity, check out this post: Remembering The Time. Michael Jackson (1958-2009) [Audio, Video Links] over on HoneySoul.com for a large list of MJ tributes on the ‘Net.
