Cupid’s Hunt 2012… “The Hunt Is On!”

OK kiddies, the kickoff day for the BIG Event has finally arrived. Even though Valentine’s Day is still four days away, the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration event starts right now… today!

Our slogan this year is… “The Hunt is On!”

So what’s it going to be? Are you the Hunter, or the Hunted? {smile}

I always look forward to this event and this year, our 5th consecutive year BTW, is no exception. As always the “RIBS Kitchen” here at Rhythms In Black Satin.com is your headquarters for all things Cupid’s Hunt so that you will have your choice of the BEST soundtracks for your Valentine’s Day enjoyment.

This year we have over a dozen podcasters that will be posting their musical take on “Love” all throughout the weekend leading up to the big day itself on Tuesday. The mixes are already starting to roll out so stay tuned right here on RIBS and also be sure to check on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for mix posting announcements. As always, this post will be edited and updated with links and information about all the podcast mixes for you to enjoy. Be sure to check back this afternoon for the first list of mixes that are available.

RIBS Archives: Side Effect, Crusaders & Swing Out Sister…

Time has been tight over here at the RIBS kitchen lately. So this week I thought I’d pull a mix out of the RIBS Archives and replay it for you. Back in November, 2007 we presented to you: Side Effect, The Crusaders and Swing Out Sister. If you were with me way back then, hopefully you’ll enjoy this one again. If you are relatively new to RIBS, then I think you are in for a real treat today…

Man I think we’ve got us a real good one this week!

While it’s always fun putting together a new mix, sometimes the vibe you get from the combination of music selections feels like something special. It’s one of those things that you can’t exactly explain or put your finger on… but it is definitely there. Today’s TPTD is one of those kinds of mixes. Overall, I’d characterize this one as having that “jazzy” feel to it, although I think you’ll find enough toe-tapping rhythms in this one that you’ll be hard pressed t keep still while it’s playing.

This week we present to you:

  1. Side Effect
  2. The Crusaders
  3. Swing Out Sister

Side Effect: What do Sylvia Nabors, Helen Lowe, Sylvia St. James, Miki Howard and Elaine Gibbs have in common? They all have, at one time or another, been the lead singer with the group Side Effect. It seems like with every new release there was a new female member of the group (although I believe Sylvia St. James actually recorded on two consecutive albums for the group!). Even with all of the various leads, Side Effect always had, IMHO, just the right mix of soulful rhythms and jazz influences to produce a dynamic, enjoyable sound.

Most of our SE selections are from their What You Need album, their first release on the Fantasy Records label. Helen Lowe is the lead singer on this one. My first taste of the group was the fantastic vocal version of Ronnie Laws’ Always There. Man, just listen to Helen blow it out on that one. Even better though is the final SE track in the mix S.O.S. Wow! I have to admit even though I’ve had this album since it first came out, I completely overlooked this song until now. And speaking of covers, Side Effect’s version of Toto’s Georgy Porgy just had to be included. My second favorite SE song after Always There.

The Crusaders: Joe Sample, Stix Hooper, Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson. Also known for a time (1961-1970) by the name The Jazz Crusaders, this group is legendary (IMHO). Their jazz-funk style that they adopted in the early 70s right around the time they shortened their name to just “The Crusaders”, produced some of my favorite jazz music that I remember from my college days. Street Life for example (released in 1979, sorry not in this mix; gotta wait for a Crusaders ‘double-triple’ for that one), is a classic that sounds just as good today as when it was first released.

For today’s mix though we have some of my other Crusaders favorites: their fantastic instrumental cover of Carol King’s So Far Away, the funky Put It Where you Want It and Chain Reaction, the beautiful It Happens Every Day and my favorite Crusaders cut, And Then There Was The Blues. You how there are just some songs you never get tired of hearing and you can listen to them over and over and over again? ATTWTB is that kind of song to me. I’m so familiar with it that I tried not to include in the mix. No, really. I really did. Oh well, guess I didn’t win that battle, eh? {smile}

Swing Out Sister: I just love Corinne Drewery’s singing voice. Can’t tell you exactly why, but I just love to listen to her sing. Are they Jazz? Are they Pop? Soul? R&B? Smooth Jazz? The actuality of it is that SOS combines elements of all these genres, plus some others. The other interesting aspect of the group is how time and again they tend to tinker with their production and arrangements, essentially reinventing themselves with each release of new material.

While I love their original hits, Breakout, Surrender and Twilight World, there just wasn’t room in the mix to include them (looks like there may have to be a special SOS ‘double-triple’ in the future also). I did manage to squeeze in Waiting Game, couldn’t have omitted that one! Swing Out Sister also has a knack for producing quality interpretations of other artists’ songs, imbuing them with a freshness that more than does justice to the original. Just check out their versions of Dusty Springfield’s Am I The Same Girl?, the Delfonics’ La La (Means I Love You) and the Fifth Dimensions’ Stoned Soul Picnic.

RIBS TPTD: More Randy Crawford…

August 13, 2009 by tgrundy · 2 Comments

Hey, welcome back, again. Another week (O.K., O.K., it’s actually been 2 weeks) and another edition of RIBS… a.k.a. “Rhythms In Black Satin”… a.k.a. “The Taste of Music to Satisfy Your Soul!” {smile}

Anyway… I have a confession to make, I’m suffering from an addiction. No, not THAT kind! (geez, what kind of a person do you think I am? On second thought, do me a favor, don’t answer that question {smile}) O.K. now, where was I… oh yeah, my confession. Yep, I have to confess I am hopelessly hooked/addicted/over the edge and I’m not exactly sure when it will end.

Actually, maybe some of you fine music lovers have suffered from the same thing I am currently experiencing. As a matter of fact, I’m sure you have. Alright, let me explain. You see sometimes when I’m futzing around in the RIBS kitchen having a good ol’ time mixing up this and mixing up that for the latest recipe, I get hooked on one of the ingredients. And even after the RIBS come out of the oven and are placed on the buffet table for the week, I still have a craving for one particular ingredient I used to make those RIBS with. I just can’t seem to get enough of it, no matter how much I consume.

This is what has been happening to me for the past couple of weeks. If you recall, two weeks ago I cooked up a very tasty batch of RIBS (IMHO) that featured Patrice Rushen, Stephanie Mills & Randy Crawford. Ever since then I’ve fallen in love with Randy Crawford all over again (just like I did when I first heard her on the Crusaders’ smash hit “Street Life” back in 1979!) It got so bad that while listening to the Patrice-Stephanie-Randy mix I found myself skipping over the Stephanie and Patrice cuts repeatedly to listen to the Randy Crawford songs in the mix. Oh boy!

Well, in an effort to cure myself of this addiction or, even better, to get you addicted also so you can “suffer” along with me {smile} this week I just had to cook up a complete mix with just Randy on it. Ahhhhhhh, I just love this woman’s voice and enjoy listening to her sing.

So… as Diana so eloquently put it, “If there’s a cure for this, I don’t want it!” Join me and let us “suffer” along together as I present to you…

RIBS TPTD: More Ballads, More Jazz…

February 19, 2009 by tgrundy · 1 Comment

Good morning, or afternoon, or evening, awww forget about it… how the hell are ya?! *smile*

Whew! We had another great Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Event this past weekend! Like to send out a big “THANK YOU!” to all of the podcasters that participated and to all of the readers/listeners who stopped by some or all of the sites to check out the music. In case you missed it, you can check out the “Cupid’s Hunt 2009… Let’s Get It On!” post where you will find the links (21 in total!) to all of the mixes.

As for today, well I’m still in a jazzy/ballads state of mind myself. The Jazz ballads mix, “Have A Jazzy Valentine” I posted for Cupid’s Hunt was very well received and a lot of fun to research and make so I thought that I would continue in that vein this week. On our buffet table you will find tasty morsels from the likes of Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington, Jr., Jack McDuff, Cal Tjader, Noel Pointer and George Howard to name a few.

A little more on the mid-to-uptempo side (mostly) than “Jazzy Valentine”, this mix is still a very smooth listen and a perfect complement to almost activity you care to undertake. So let’s kick back, relax and stay in a “jazzy” frame of mind as we present to you this week:

OK, making good on my promise to get back on schedule over here. This week’s RIBS is one that was supposed to be posted a few weeks ago but I was “overcome by events” (as the saying goes) and am just posting it now.

Credit for the idea of our trio this week goes out to RR, one of my coworkers. These three are some of her favs:

  1. Sade
  2. Lionel Richie (solo)
  3. Luther Vandross

And a very nice combination it is if I say so myself. Well, since I’m back let’s forgo a lot of “talk” this time around and get right to the music!
