Anyway, the thing is… I think the bands that get noticed and praised for their up-tempo/dance music also get the short end of the stick and not enough credit for the beautiful ballads and instrumentals that many of them produce. WAR is one such group that is a great example of this.

Go ahead, ask folks what their favorite WAR songs are. They’ll mention “Cisco Kid”, “Low Rider”, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”, maybe a few others. The closest they might come to a “mellow” tune from the group might be the jazzy, mid-tempo “The World Is A Ghetto”. I doubt that you’ll hear answers like “All Day Music”, “Deliver The Word”, “I’ll Take Care Of You” or “Don’t Let No One Get You Down”.

Anita was one of the premier divas of the 80’s producing 5 very well received albums and many hit singles between the years 1983 and 1994. After a 10 year hiatus in which she decided to spend time with her new family, Anita reemerged in 2004 with the album “My Everything” and a Christmas album in 2005 titled “Christmas Fantasy”. She’s been touring and performing again ever since and has a new album “Only Forever” that is due out soon.

Syreeta, the former Mrs. Stevie Wonder (the two were married for a short time from September 1970 until the summer of 1972), was a longtime collaborator of Stevie’s. Remaining best friends, Wright would continue to provide background vocals and compositions with Wonder for the next two decades. In addition to her solo work, Syreeta would also have successful collaborations with Billy Preston and G.C. Cameron before succumbing to cancer in 2004 at the age of 57.

Hello Kiddies!

The big day has finally arrived and the BIG Event is underway! The Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration event is rocking and rolling and gonna take you right through the entire long holiday weekend (here in the United States). Hell, if it gets really good (like it usually does) I might even call for Cupid’s Hunt to last throughout the rest of the month of February! {smile}

Our sub-title this year is: “The Hunt is ON…Again!”

And again we ask, what’s it going to be? Are you the HUNTER or the HUNTED? {smile}

This is our 6th consecutive year of producing this event and I don’t see any end in sight. I mean, as long as there is “romance” you will always need a love music soundtrack to go along with it!

As always the “RIBS Kitchen” here at Rhythms In Black Satin.com is your headquarters for all things Cupid’s Hunt so that you will have your choice of the BEST soundtracks for your Valentine’s Day enjoyment.

This year’s count of participating DJs and podcasters numbers just over 20 (whoo-hoo!) which means that there will be over 24 hours of love music available to you when everything is said and done. Wow! Can. Ya. Handle. It? {smile}

Wow! I have to admit this first day of Cupid’s Hunt 2013 was “out of sight”, “off da hook” or whatever adjective/phrase you want to use to show that you’re pleased and excited! In addition to the number of ‘casts released, I’m taken by the variety of sounds and music that the CH participants have blessed us with. There is truly something for everybody here. OK. OK. Before I start really rambling on and on, let’s get you caught up on the music released in the latter part of the day yesterday…

Whew! Hold on to your hats (or other things… DOH!) cause Cupid’s Hunt is in full swing and far from over yet!

After a relatively quiet day on Saturday, the release activities picked up again as the day came to a close. The lone exception was Sista Suga who snuck in her 2nd CH mix in the early morning hours of Saturday. All in all the BIG Event was pleased to see the podcasts from DarrenKeith and Macedonia posted online AND very happy to finally get one of the RIBS CH mixes finished and posted.
This brings the total number of Cupid’s Hunt mixes to 21 strong.Still a few more promised so we’ll see where that number ends up when we do the final tally.

Anyone who follows Cupid’s Hunt knows that it’s never really over until we escape the month of February. And, true to form, we’re sneaking in the last couple of CH mixes for ya right here on the last day of the month.

So! The 6th annual Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration event for 2013 has presented you with a total of 25 different mixes for the Day of Love. 2. El Slick: Cupid’s Hunt 2013-I Wish You Love, Part 2

Another one of the music artists I grew up listening to has moved on to Soul Heaven. This one is noteworthy for me as Donald Byrd was one of the two artists (George Benson and his “Bad Benson” album being the other one) that I credit with introducing me to that mysterious (at least at that time in my life) thing called “Jazz”.

This initial look at Dr. Byrd’s music will focus on the five albums he recorded for the Blue Note label between 1972 and 1976 and produced by the Mizell Brothers:

1. Black Byrd (1972)
2. Street Lady (1973)
3. Stepping Into Tomorrow (1974)
4. Places And Spaces (1975)
5. Caricatures (1976)

This was the period when he moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record what was to become known as “jazz-fusion” (a blending of jazz and rhythms & blues elements). The jazz purists hated it and were very critical of this move, but the albums were very successful commercially (AAMOF, the “Black Byrd” album became the highest selling album in the entire history of the Blue Note label) and opened up jazz music to a whole new audience.  

OK. On to the music. This is RIBS and we remember Donald Byrd.
