RIBS TPTD: “Merry Christmas, Baby” - A Baker’s Dozen…

More “Sounds of the Season” from RIBS!

Today we’re doing something a little different. You may like it or hate it, we’ll have to see…

I’ve been asked by a few folks this month what my favorite Christmas song is, and I’ve answered without hesitation Luther Vandross’ “Every Year, Every Christmas”. However, my second favorite Christmas song is the subject of our mix today, the Christmas classic, “Merry Christmas, Baby”. Originally done by Charles Brown this song has been covered by just about EVERYBODY it seems whenever they perform a set of Christmas music.

So… I got to thinkin’ one day, “Just how many versions of this song are there?” Well, the answer is: “A lot!” *smile*

Now, often a DJ will take a couple of versions of a song, the original and a cover version and play them back to back so you can contrast and compare them to one another. Well today we’re taking 13 (that’s the “baker’s dozen” part of the title) and presenting them to you all in one mix. Yeah, yeah I know sounds kinda boring doesn’t it. Well, I’ve labored long and hard to find versions that were different enough so that it wouldn’t be repetitive, BUT… you have to be the judge of that.

Without further ado, RIBS’ Sounds of the Season presents to you:

RIBS TPTD: A ‘Funky’ Christmas…

Ahhh… Christmas time and Christmas music! Next to the start of the baseball season it’s my favorite time of year.

As promised, we’re continuing to give you the “Sounds of the Season” here on RIBS. This week we leave behind the sad/broken-hearted side of Christmas that (unfortunately) many folks experience during the holiday season and turn our attention to a little Christmas “soul music”. And not just any old soulful renditions of Christmas songs, but songs with a funky beat that you could party and dance to while getting your holiday spirit (or “spirits” *smile*) on! (Note: this mix is another of the ones I first posted last year in 2007, but it is such a cool (and funky! {smile}) collection of songs that I just had to post it for you again!)

Hopefully you will enjoy this collection that I call…

A ‘Funky’ Christmas!

…and don’t worry, it’s NOT a bunch of the same old uptempo R&B Christmas tunes that we usually hear over and over and over again on the radio!

RIBS TPTD: A “Lonely” Christmas…

Ahhh… the holiday season is upon us!

Just as we did around here last year, the month of December is going to be devoted to what we like to call the ‘Sounds of the Season’. From now until the beginning of the year the mixes here on RIBS will be a variety of “themed” Christmas music from a number of different genres: Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Blues and maybe even a little Pop and/or Rock too.

First up is my favorite mix from this time last year that I wanted to present here again, not only because I like it so much, but because there are a number of you (perhaps most of you {smile}) who missed it back then because you didn’t know this place existed (back then I called it “A ‘Broken Hearted’ Xmas”, but I thought “A ‘Lonely’ Christmas” was a little bit better, so I renamed it). Here’s the original intro…

Christmas time. For many folks it’s the happiest time of year. However, for many others it can also be the saddest time of year.

I have always thought that it was ironic that some of the most beautiful (to me at least) Christmas songs were the ones about being sad and/or broken-hearted at this time of year. This week during our month-long look at the ‘Sounds of the Season’ here at RIBS we look at the other side of Christmas…

…and present to you:

A “Lonely” Christmas!

RIBS TPTD: A “Snuggle Wit Cho Baby” Xmas…

OK, I was a little hasty when I said the Jazzy Xmas mix was the last one in this series. This one though, our 7th mix, definitely will finish out the ‘Sounds of the Season’ here on RIBS.

Time to get cozy and snuggle up with your baby!

I figure at this point all the craziness that is this thing we call the holiday season is just about over. All of the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, etc. Time to take a break, sit back and just relax.

So, here’s what you do. After the kids all tucked in for bed, you two can turn the lights down low, curl up under some black satin and let Isaac Hayes, Babyface, Nancy Wilson, Patti LaBelle, Brook Benton and a few others whisk away your cares on a cloud of soulful music perfect for quiet moments like this. May your holidays be happy and safe and sensuously soulful as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: A “Jazzy” Xmas…

Our 6th and final (maybe) mix in our month-long ‘Sounds of the Season’ series here on RIBS.

Time to get a little “Jazzy” on ya!

Of all the many different variations of Christmas music that there are, I have to admit, I really like the Jazz interpretations the best. There’s something about Jazz and Christmas music that just fits together so beautifully, like they were made for each other. So, IMO, a series of Christmas mixes just wouldn’t be right if it didn’t include some Jazz (and maybe just a touch of Blues {smile}).

Our Jazz lineup today includes: the Vince Guaraldi Trio, Fourplay, Jimmy Smith, Michael Franks, Denise LaSalle (there’s that touch of Blues I mentioned), Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves and more. Still got that black satin to wrap around ya? Good. Grab some eggnog (and Rum!) and get comfortable as we present to you…

Mix #5 in our month-long ‘Sounds of the Season’ series here on RIBS!

This time around we turn our attention to some of the “Soulful” sounds of the holiday season. A real pleasing mix of some traditional and original Christmas tunes from some of our favorite Soul (and a couple of Jazz) artists. Sit back, relax, and of course, envelope yourself in the black satin sounds of Alexander O’Neal, The Temptations, Whitney Houston, Lou Rawls, The Whispers and many more as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: A “Blues” Xmas…

Our 4th mix for the ‘Sounds of the Season’ turns our attention to the “Blues” baby!

I think my earliest recollection of a Blues Christmas song has to be Charles Brown’s “Merry Christmas, Baby”. At that young age I recall it just “sounding so different” from the rest of the Christmas music that I heard all of the time. Ever since then some of my favorite songs at this time of year have been Blues versions of traditional Christmas music or, even better, original Blues tunes composed for the holiday season.

Now, if you are not familiar with the Blues, don’t go thinking that this is going to be the kind mix that you’ll put on in the background and fall asleep to. No, no, no. While many Blues tunes have a slow, drawn out tempo typical of the early years of the genre, the Blues can be a lot more funkier than you may realize.

Well, to paraphrase Fave, since “any day of the week can be a Thurs-Day” here’s a Monday morning version of the RIBS Triple Play Thurs-Day as we present to you…
