RIBS TPTD: “The Gospel Of Soul”…
Filed under: Gospel, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey Everybody!
Sorry for the silence around here the past few weeks. Things have been quite busy/crazy over here for a while and I didn’t get much time to play in the kitchen as a result.
Basically, it’s one of those times when all you can say is, “I’ve been going through some thangs, lately.” You know what I’m talking about, we all go through some “thangs” from time to time. As a matter of fact, I have a few friends that are going through some thangs themselves right now. I won’t name names (this is not that kind of a site) but I do wish them well and they stay in my prayers.
Speaking of prayers, that is a perfect lead-in to the mix today. Things have been swirling around me so fast lately that I’ve losing track of which way is up. It’s at times like that that you need something to hold on to, something solid that can steady you and calm you in a time of turmoil. And that something is our faith… our belief in God.
So, in trying to navigate the craziness of the past few weeks, I decided to put together a Gospel themed mix, some sounds of inspiration and praise by some of our contemporary Gospel artists and some R&B/Soul artists that we know and love.
Remember, God won’t ever give you more than you can handle. Or, like they say in one of this week’s songs, “Maybe God is trying to tell you something”…

RIBS TPTD: In Memoriam 2008, R.I.P.
Filed under: Funk, Gospel, R.I.P., RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, blues, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
TG Notes: A little late getting this one out, but I’ve been caught up in the holidays and my vacation and have been just plain lazy most of the past week *smile*. But here we go…
January, 2009… the start of another new year. New hopes, new excitement… new fears. A time to shake off the old and begin anew. A time for a fresh start on a new journey or a recommitment with renewed determination to a journey that has already begun.
A time for looking forward…
However, as the saying goes, “if you don’t know where you’ve been, how will you know where you’re going?” (I’m paraphrasing the exact quote here I guess; anybody know where the original quote came from by any chance?)
So with that in mind, before we turn ourselves towards the front and push forward to our individual destinies, let us collectively take a few moments to look back and reflect upon those music artists and entertainers that left us during the past twelve months during 2008.
Maybe it’s just me and the fact that I pay attention to music a lot more closely these days than I have in the past, but it seems like 2008 was a particularly bad year in that a large number of our artists passed away, a few quite unexpectedly. The following is a list of those artists/entertainers we lost last year whose music, memory and talent we honor in this week’s mix:
- Buddy Miles, d. Feb 26, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
- Al Wilson, Apr 21, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
- Jimmy McGriff, d. May 24, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
- Bo Diddley, d. Jun 2, 2008
- George Carlin, Jun 22, 2008
- Ira Tucker Sr. (The Dixie Hummingbirds), d. Jun 24, 2008
- Bernie Mac, d. Aug 9, 2008
- Isaac Hayes, d. Aug 10, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mixes here and here)
- Jerry Wexler, d, Aug 15, 2008
- Pervis Jackson (The Spinners), d. Aug 18, 2008
- Jerry Reed, d. Sept 1, 2008
- Norman Whitfield, d. Sept 16, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
- Levi Stubbs (Four Tops), d. Oct 17, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
- Dee Dee Warwick, d. Oct 18, 2008
- Miriam Makeba, d. Nov 10, 2008
- Odetta, d. Dec 2, 2008
- Dennis Yost (Classics IV), d. Dec 7, 2008
- Eartha Kitt, d. Dec 25, 2008
- Freddie Hubbard, d. Dec 29, 2008 (RIBS “In Memoriam” mix here)
Just a few more quick notes about the playlist to make sure there is no confusion. The Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin songs are on the list to honor Jerry Wexler. He, along with Ahmet Ertegun, was responsible for making Atlantic Records such a major force in music back in the 50s and 60s He’s credited with jump starting the career of Ray and turning Aretha’s career around after her less than stellar years at Columbia Records. Oh, and one more “little” thing… in 1948 as a writer for Billboard Magazine Jerry coined the term “Rhythm and Blues” as a musical marketing term in the United States.
Norman Whitfield writer/producer extraordinaire for Motown Records in the 60s and 70s is represented by one of his all-time great songs, “Cloud Nine” by the Temptations and one of his most recognizable compositions, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” performed by Gladys Knight and The Pips. As you may know “Grapevine” was also a hit for Marvin Gaye and has also been performed and/or covered by numerous groups over the years, not the least of which was the clay-animated singing group The California Raisins, a fictional group originally created for a 1986 commercial on behalf of the California Raisin Advisory Board. (BTW, did you know that Buddy Miles was the lead singer voice of The California Raisins?)
Fortunately, the memories and the music will live on forever. So, let’s lift our glasses high in honor of these dearly departed as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: A “Gospel” Christmas…
Filed under: Gospel, Holiday, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, Xmas, music, podcasts/mixes
One last “Sounds of the Season” mix from RIBS for the 2008 holidays.
I was actually trying to finish this one in time for posting on Christmas Day but with all of the family activities (and “honey-do” *smile*) of the 24th and 25th I just ran out of time. And yeah I know, I know what some of ya’ll are saying… geesh, TGrundy, it’s after Christmas, enough with the Christmas music already.
To that I say… haven’t we all, at one time or another, said and/or felt we wish it could be Christmas everyday?
Also, don’t let the word “gospel” in the mix title fool you. While not exactly the Kirk Franklin “Stomp” type of gospel, the mix is far from the more traditional Mahalia Jackson gospel sound also (I say that with absolutely NO DISRESPECT towards Mahalia, one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived) With 1 or 2 exceptions the majority of the selections in the mix fall in the Contemporary Gospel category as there are selections from Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Mary Mary and Sandra Crouch and many more.
So, for the Sunday after Christmas here in 2008 RIBS presents to you:

RIBS TPTD: Barack Obama, President-elect - The “Happy” Mix…
Filed under: Gospel, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Man, oh man, what an historic and exhilarating week it has been with the election of Barack Obama as the first person of African-American descent to be President of the United States of America.
Wow!
The flood of feelings and emotions that have been washing over me is way, way too immense to even try and verbalize them. And anyway, I express myself so much better and more eloquently with my music as opposed to my words and/or writing.
This week’s RIBS TPTD mix is dedicated with great pride to President-elect Barack Obama (man it feels good to write THOSE words, President-elect Barack Obama, Whoo!) and to the beautiful new First Family that will soon take up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I many ways I would like you to think of this mix as part 2 of the fantastic OSW mix that the “PodFather”, EJ Flavors, posted on Wednesday. I had the pleasure and honor of suggesting a few songs for that one but kept enough to myself so I could continue the great vibe over here on RIBS.
I’m calling this one “The ‘Happy’ Mix” as the majority of the songs have the word happy somewhere in the title. The word happy and the word change are the two words that I keep coming back to as I think about the results of the election this past Tuesday night. Change, of course, is the wonderful message/theme of the Obama campaign that brings us all hope for a brighter future for this country after the darkness of the past eight years of the current administration. And Happy because, well, as a person of color in this world that is tired of divisiveness and who hopes that we all can just get along, if the election of Barack Obama doesn’t make you happy then I just don’t know what to say to ya! {smile}
Soooo, sit back, be HAPPY and… “Congratulations, President-elect Barack Obama!”

What Is “Soul Music”?
OK, so I’m listening to one of my favorite podcasts this past Friday morning, the Friday Favecast by Fave, and at about the 16 minute, 30 second mark he asks a question that I have *NOT* been able to stop thinking about:
“WHAT IS SOUL MUSIC?”
He goes on to define the question further by asking, “How do you explain to a cat over in the UK or over in Japan or Paris what “soul” is?”, especially if they have never heard it before.
“WHAT IS SOUL MUSIC?”
Ever since then I have been thinking about this question and, to be honest, have even become a little obsessive about it. I had to laugh the other day when I noticed that with every song I play or hear now, inevitably I ask myself, “Is this soul?” Like I said… obsessive. {smile}
Well, I thought I would enlist the help of my RIBS readers and throw the question out to all of you. What is soul music to music to you? How do you define it? What is the history of soul music? How would you explain what it is to someone who has never heard it?
I have been researching this topic off and on for the past week and most of what I have read centers around soul music as a “feeling” or an “emotion” that a person has when listening to or singing this music. While that is very much an integral component of soul and I don’t disagree with that definition, I do want to offer another viewpoint as an additional (and very important) component of what soul is:
Soul music has it’s roots intricately intertwined with the experience of Blacks in America to survive and persevere, especially during the years of slavery and its aftermath.
If you break it down there are four different sources which have shaped soul: racial, geographical, historical and economic factors. From a ‘technical’ point of view, it is the merging of R&B and Gospel in the late 1950’s. Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown and Solomon Burke are commonly regarded as the pioneers of this style of music.
Agree? Disagree? And what about “soul music” today in 2008? Just like I can name Ray, Sam, James and Solomon above as the beginnings of soul, who are the “soul” singers of today that we’ll be talking about 20, 30 or 40 years down the road?
Looking forward to some interesting discussion…
