Cupid’s Hunt 2013: WAR-LOVE!…

WAR. One of my favorite ‘funk’ bands. They are probably second only to Sly and the Family Stone in that regard. (of course, my all-time, favorite bands is a conversation for another day. Hmmm, might even make a good subject for a future podcast!)

Anyway, the thing is… I think the bands that get noticed and praised for their up-tempo/dance music also get the short end of the stick and not enough credit for the beautiful ballads and instrumentals that many of them produce. WAR is one such group that is a great example of this.

Go ahead, ask folks what their favorite WAR songs are. They’ll mention “Cisco Kid”, “Low Rider”, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”, maybe a few others. The closest they might come to a “mellow” tune from the group might be the jazzy, mid-tempo “The World Is A Ghetto”. I doubt that you’ll hear answers like “All Day Music”, “Deliver The Word”, “I’ll Take Care Of You” or “Don’t Let No One Get You Down”.

    2. You left out one of their best releases, though more popular on the house scene…..”City. Country. City”! And I’d have to disagree with you on them being afunk band. As to them being a pure “fink” band, well I’ll leave that discussion for anothre day!

    Actually, my favorite WAR song is “All Day Music”. Hot summers in cool basements…that song transports me.
