RIBS TPTD: Duos & Duets, part 4…
Hey! Time for another edition of RIBS…
{BIG sigh} Man, what a day I had Thursday going into Friday. I had worked all day Thursday and was just settling down around 6:30 that evening to post this new mix when I got THE CALL. Emergency at work, major crash of the storage area network (SAN) on our LAN. Could I come in to help out? When your boss’ boss calls you personally at home like this what are you gonna say? No? {smile} Anyway, to make a long story short, I got back to the office about 10:30pm and didn’t leave until 9:00am Friday morning. The good news is that we got the system back up and running just in time for the start of the business day and none of our users were affected by any downtime. Needless to say the rest of Friday was spent in a state of slumber. Ahhh, I remember the good ol’ days when I could pull those 24, 30 or 36 hour days with little to no sleep and not think twice about it! But, as they say, that was THEN and this is now. {smile}
So, I said all of that to explain why this particular edition of RIBS is getting posted on Saturday morning instead of Thursday.
Now, let’s get to the music! This week was the last Thursday of the month and that means it’s time for another edition of our Duos & Duets series. This one is part 4. D&D, just in case you are not familiar with it, is our look at musical combinations: 2-person groups (Ashford & Simpson), individual artists that combine for a song or an album (Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, “On My Own”), two groups that combine on a song or album (Diana Ross & the Supremes and the Temptations) or even an instrumentalist or group with a featured singer (Grover Washington, Jr. and Patti LaBelle, “The Best Is Yet To Come”). Sometimes I have a RIBS “Co-Chef” help me out with the Duos & Duets mix, but today I’m flying solo. Oh, one more thing I almost forgot to mention. I’ve finally relented and, starting with this mix, I have a vocal intro that I’ll be doing on the mixes on a regular basis. I usually like to let the music speak for itself, but I think these intros could be a lot of fun to do. I certainly had a good time doing this initial one! Isn’t that right, EJ? {LOL! BIG smile}

RIBS TPTD: Bloodstone, We Go A Long Way Back…
Hey Everybody!
After a couple of delays (some time issues IRL and then the passing of Teddy Pendergrass), I am very happy to finally post this particular RIBS mix. Now, seeing as how I tried to “talk” your eyes off in the TP tribute post, I’ll keep this one short and sweet so we can get right to the music. However, I do have a couple of things that need to be said…
First of all our buffet today is brought to you by the group, Bloodstone. In the discussion of great sounding soul groups and classic soul songs I think this group often gets overlooked. Reason being is that they never had a continuous flow, they had a good run in the early 70s and that huge, monster of a hit, “Natural High”, plus some others. Then they more or less disappeared for awhile resurfacing in 1982 with their We Go A Long Way Back album, getting two of it’s songs in the R&B Top 20 chart. While many consider them to have been one of the instrumental groups in the “black rock” and funk movement of the 1970s, I have always considered them to be at their best performing their mid-tempo cuts and ballads. And those are the songs that we feature here today.
Secondly, as I alluded to in the Teddy Pendergrass post, one of the great things about music is that it takes you back to different times and places in your life. For me, Bloodstone is one of those groups that has one of those songs that takes me back…

In Memorium: Teddy Pendergrass, R.I.P.
I hope I don’t ramble on for too long on this one, but if I do please bear with me…
If you are any kind of a fan of Soul/R&B music, you know that Theodore DeReese “Teddy” Pendergass, one of the great male, soul singers of this generation, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. As a person that basically grew up with Teddy’s music as a big part of his life AND as a fan of music in general AND as a person who was a radio and mobile DJ during my college years, whenever a musical icon like this leaves this world it is a time of great reflection. And so it is with Teddy Pendergrass.
From his early years with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and on through his wonderful solo career, Teddy was one of those artists whose music a part of so many enjoyable and important moments in my life. So much so that when you reflect back on his career and all of the music that he made for us to enjoy, what you are find yourself really doing is looking back on and traveling down the highways of your life. The term I like to use for this is the “Soundtrack of My Life”.
Over the past few days as I’ve been playing many of Teddy’s songs and talking to various friends about him and flood of memories has come rushing back to me and taking me back to times and places that are cherished memories from my past. The Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes songs especially take me back to lots of high school memories… hanging out in East Orange, taking the #49 bus to E.O. to visit Sharon on Sundays, missing that last #49 bus to get back home and having to call my father to come pick me up (not a fun ride back home I can tell ya, Dad was *not* happy when I did that! {smile}), the parties in Plainfield at Mark’s house with the boys from Wardlaw (oh those parties in Plainfield, Whoooo!). And then there were the college memories… all those super slow songs that became a Teddy trademark, Come Go With Me, Close The Door, Turn Out The Lights, Love T.K.O. Whooooo! We used to joke that if you were planning a romantic evening with your lady all you needed was some Isaac Hayes, Barry White, Isley Brothers and Teddy Pendergrass, and if THAT didn’t work, well, just forget about it. LOL!
The best Teddy/college memory though was created by my roommate Owen. We all (maybe about 6-7 of us) were going out to dinner one night and “O” got onto this kick explaining how Teddy must really be into sado-masochism. As he explained it, all you had to do was just listen to his songs, Teddy was always “ordering” his women around, “Come here, baby!” “Do it to me, and I’ll do it to you!” “Would you rub me down in some burning hot oil baby, and I swear, I swear I’ll do the same thing to you!” and then he’d always go, “Ugh!” And, of course, Owen was doing all of this in his best parody of that deep, guttural tone that is a Teddy Pendergrass trademark. I’m telling you, he had us dying laughing in the car that night, tears just running down our faces we were laughing so hard. I bet it took us a good 15 minutes to collect ourselves so we could go into the restaurant to have dinner! Makes me smile all over again just thinking about it.
So many great memories. Anyway, let’s move on to the mix before I bore you with my own personal trip down memory lane. First off I want to acknowledge my brothers and sisters in podcasting for making this tribute mix happen. We like to call ourselves the “Music Podcast Consortium” (props, as always, to Todd Kelley for coining the name) and this collaboration has truly been an example of unselfish teamwork. Here are the folks who helped cook this one up: EJ Flavors, Butta, Fave, KB, DJ Diva, Macedonia, Nikki, and Todd “Big La” Kelley.
So, what you are about to listen to can best be described as a Music Podcast Consortium Presentation! Assist, collaborate, help and share, that’s what the MPC is all about.

New RIBS Delayed - Sleep Well, Teddy…
Hey Peeps!
Just a quick note to let you guys & gals know what’s going on over here at the RIBS Kitchen™ and the new mix (Bloodstone) that was supposed to be posted yesterday (Thursday). Unfortunately, as the saying goes, we’ve been “overcome by events” and that’s the cause of the delay. With the devastating events in Haiti (and trying to re-post any legitimate relief information as it’s released) and the sad news that Teddy Pendergrass had passed away, the decision was made to push the release of the new mix back another week.
When the word came down about Teddy, my brothers and sisters in podcasting (a.k.a. the Music Podcast Consortium) drooped everything and gathered online to reminisce about the music and also put together a list of songs for a tribute mix for one of the most notable soul singers of our generation. Let me take a moment to give a shout out of appreciation to my online fam for their time to make this happen:

Site Maintenance Time, Update #1…
Well… I’ve identified the offending code. I’ve been using the Featured Content Gallery plug-in to display featured posts/graphics above the left/right columns on the home page. For whatever reason it decided to “lose it’s mind” and take over my whole page. Disabled it for now until I can run some tests to see if I can get it to work right again.
