RIBS TPTD: Duos & Duets, part 3…
Hey Everybody, welcome back to Rhythms In Black Satin and… Happy New Year!
A little late getting this one up ({sigh} what else is new around here? although I made a promise to myself that in the new year I would strive to get the “Triple Play Thurs-Day” mix actually posted on a Thursday; working on it). So, technically, even though this isn’t being published until the 3rd day in January “twenty-ten” I actually consider this the very last RIBS mix of 2009.
OK, what we have here is the continuation (finally) of our Duos & Duets series here on RIBS. Back in August, I presented a mix called “Duos & Duets, part 1″ with my “Co-Chef” Trelly. Just as a reminder, the D&D series takes musical duos (2-person groups) or duets (solo artists that collaborate on a single song or, in some cases, an entire album) and whip them up for a RIBS mix. The faithful really seemed to enjoy these mixes and, as a result, I turned it into a regular monthly series that happens on the last Thursday of the month. Another twist with the Duos & Duets series is that I invite other music podcasters and/or music lovers (I affectionately call them “Co-Chefs”) to help put the mix together. So far I’ve had the pleasure of working with Trelly of ONUTSS fame, and a musical mind that most of us Soul/R&B podcasters look up to, my man KB of JustSayKB and the “Quick Mix” fame. Would *you* like to be a RIBS Duos & Duets Co-Chef this year? Hit me up at:
RIBS [at] rhythmsinblacksatin.com so we can discuss the details.
Today’s D&D mix Co-Chef is none other than Michael Anatole. Mike is a great music fan AND he roots for the Mets in baseball. My kind of guy! Together (90% Michael-10% me) we have a very nice selection of songs fort you in this 3rd Duos & Duets mix. “Thank you, Mike!” And my apologies for taking so long to get this posted, BUT… it *is* a great way to end up the year here on RIBS!
Without further ado, let’s get to the music as Mike and I present to you…

RIBS TPTD: A Funky Christmas 2009…
Filed under: Christmas, Funk, Holiday, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, Xmas, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey! Good to see ya back again. I hope you have been enjoying our “Sounds of the Season” here on Rhythms In Black Satin.
Before I get to rambling on about our third “Xmas RIBS” mix for 2009 let me just say that I do so very much appreciate you and all the readers and listeners of this site for popping in here and letting me share my love of music with you. May you and your loved ones have a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!
Now… on to the mix.
If you’ve been following RIBS around this time of year you know that I like to make Christmas mixes that are a little different. As much as I like all of the holiday music that the season brings, the one thing I dislike is hearing the same old standards over and over again in the weeks leading up to the big day. So back in 2007 I started doing my own take on Christmas putting together mixes featuring some great Soul/R&B, Jazz, Blues and Gospel that don’t usually get played very often. It’s been a lot of fun and everybody seems to like them a lot.
On today’s buffet table I’m serving up an uptempo Xmas mix called “A Funky Christmas 2009″. This is a bookend to the first mix of this type that you can find here. The Christmas holiday is a joyous occasion, time for visiting family and friends, relaxing and… partying! And a little funky Christmas music mix is just the thing to get it started!
Merry Christmas everybody!

RIBS TPTD: “This Christmas” - A Baker’s Dozen…
Filed under: A Bakers Dozen, Christmas, Holiday, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, Xmas, jazz, podcasts/mixes, soul
Alright, time for Round #2…
The second (of three) “Sounds of the Season” Xmas mixes we’re serving up for you here at Rhythms In Black Satin is called, “This Christmas” - A Baker’s Dozen.
This one is a little different, so let me explain what you will be listening to.
Last year someone asked me what my favorite Christmas song was and without hesitation (as I always do) I answered “Every Year, Every Christmas” by Luther. My second favorite though is the classic “Merry Christmas, Baby” originally done by Charles Brown. Like many of the classic Christmas tunes that have been around for years, there are many, many versions of this song from Blues to Rock and everything in between. Well, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided I would try to put together a mix of 13 (that’s where the “baker’s dozen” part of the title comes from) different versions of the song without it being so boring that you’d run from the room screaming! {smile} Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) it came out pretty good and a lot of folks really enjoyed it.
Well… since that turned out so well I thought I would go back and try it again with another Christmas favorite of mine. This time I chose Donny Hathaway’s 1970 classic “This Christmas” (number 3 on my personal list of all-time fav Xmas songs) as the subject of our baker’s dozen format.
OK, that’s the explanation. Now let’s get on with the music. It’s RIBS, baby! It’s Xmas RIBS! It’s…

RIBS TPTD: A Soulful Christmas 2009
Filed under: Holiday, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, Xmas, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey everybody, I’M BACK!!!
Well… it has been a “minute” since we’ve served up a new dish here at Rhythms In Black Satin, actually about 8 weeks to tell the truth of the matter. Sorry for the unexpected and extended hiatus, but things IRL did not permit me the time to devote my little spot here. hopefully the worse is behind me now and we can get back to our regular weekly get togethers from here on out.
Even with the time challenges I’ve been dealing with one of the things I wanted to make sure I did was post some new Christmas mixes or “Sounds of the Season” as I like to call ‘em around here in celebration of the Christmas holiday. I’ve been doing this for the past two Christmases and I did not want to miss doing it again this year. BTW, you can check out the mixes from 2007 and 2008 by clicking on the ARCHIVES PAGE link in the Navigation bar at the top of the page or, even easier click the Xmas Category link here.
OK! I have three Xmas 2009 mixes that I’ve cooked up for the Return of RIBS today. Our first one is called A Soulful Christmas 2009.
This mix is a continuation of the first “A Soulful Christmas” mix that we published back in 2007. As I described it back then it’s “a real pleasing mix of some traditional and original Christmas tunes from some of our favorite Soul artists”. The 2009 version includes soulful sounds from folks like The Four Tops, Rahsaan Patterson, The Whispers, Luther Vandross, Keith Sweat and Joe just to name a few.
It’s been a long time a comin’ but I am so very happy to be setting the buffet table once again with a fresh batch of RIBS for you to enjoy. It’s Christmas time that most wonderful time of the year! Time to enjoy some sounds of the season, RIBS style as we present to you…
