RIBS TPTD: Outlaw 2009…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, blues, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
You know, sometimes we get attached to something and it always has a special place in our hearts. You know the kinds of things I mean… your first car, those old jeans you like to lounge around in on the weekends, your baseball glove from high school, that big, oversized Valentine’s Day card you got one year… yeah those things.
Well, music is like that too (for me at least and, I expect, for many of you out there also). Today’s playlist is a perfect example of this fact. I originally made this mix sometime back during the college days. At the risk of dating myself that is over 25 years ago. For some reason that I still can’t really explain, it has always been one of my favorite collection of songs and this tape (the original mix was on a 90 minute cassette tape, TDK as I recall) has logged many a mile with me up and down the highways and byways of my life.
The bad news, unfortunately, is that the original cassette tape has been missing for the past several years. The good news is that I did actually write down the songs that comprised the playlist (can’t say that for quite a few other old cassette tapes I still have lying around. Many a ‘mystery’ song or two on those! But I digress…) So even though the original mix has been lost (I still hope it turns up one of these days if/when I ever pack up and move again. I’ve found so many ‘lost’ items that way, haven’t you? *smile*) with the playlist in hand and today’s computer technology the mix could be easily recreated. No problem, right? I wish it were that easy. As my luck would have it I was able to collect EVERY song for the playlist… except one, the Taj Mahal cut “Why?…And We Repeat/Why?…And We Repeat” (in case you are interested, this song is found on a relatively obscure TM album called Music Keeps Me Together). And, of course, THAT happened to be my favorite cut in the entire mix!
Undaunted, over the years I have recreated the mix using other songs as a substitute for the Taj Mahal cut. I’ve tried “Love Is The Message” by MFSB, “Spiral” by the Crusaders, and a few others. And while it was nice to have the mix again (this time on CD, of course) as a traveling companion, it really was just not quite the same. Something was missing, the flow was just not quite the one I remembered, enjoyed and, above all wanted.
The irony of this story is that I actually had the Taj Mahal song all along… on vinyl. Yep, every time I would play around with another variation of the mix that Music Keeps Me Together album would be peeking over my shoulder at me. It’s like it was whispering in my ear, “you know the song you want is right here, all you have to do is convert it to MP3 format”. Problem was… no turntable, well no working turntable I should say. Out of four units I owned, each one had some kind of a problem: no stylus on one, no belt on the other, the motor on the third one would speed up and/or slow down at various times during the playing of a record. And the fourth one? I could never locate the box I stored it in during the last move. *sigh* So close, so close…
To wrap up this tale, a month ago I found the fourth turntable! I was looking for something else (of course) when the discovery happened (isn’t that always the case?). Well, I wasted no time in hooking that thing up the the computer system and digitizing that Taj Mahal disc! And now the mix, my traveling buddy, is back whole again in all its original glory. So to celebrate my good fortune and happiness, I am pleased to share with and present to you…

RIBS TPTD: More Ballads, More Jazz…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Good morning, or afternoon, or evening, awww forget about it… how the hell are ya?! *smile*
Whew! We had another great Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Event this past weekend! Like to send out a big “THANK YOU!” to all of the podcasters that participated and to all of the readers/listeners who stopped by some or all of the sites to check out the music. In case you missed it, you can check out the “Cupid’s Hunt 2009… Let’s Get It On!” post where you will find the links (21 in total!) to all of the mixes.
As for today, well I’m still in a jazzy/ballads state of mind myself. The Jazz ballads mix, “Have A Jazzy Valentine” I posted for Cupid’s Hunt was very well received and a lot of fun to research and make so I thought that I would continue in that vein this week. On our buffet table you will find tasty morsels from the likes of Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington, Jr., Jack McDuff, Cal Tjader, Noel Pointer and George Howard to name a few.
A little more on the mid-to-uptempo side (mostly) than “Jazzy Valentine”, this mix is still a very smooth listen and a perfect complement to almost activity you care to undertake. So let’s kick back, relax and stay in a “jazzy” frame of mind as we present to you this week:

RIBS TPTD: Cupid’s Hunt - “My Funny Valentine”-A Baker’s Dozen
Filed under: CupidsHunt, Podcast Collabs, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Yep, we’re still celebrating Cupid’s Hunt and and the spirit of L-O-V-E all weekend long. And for some of us that means a long 3-day weekend cause we have Monday off!
Here’s a mix I put together for the celebration that I hope you find interesting. First though, I must give credit where credit is due. The inspiration for this playlist was sparked from a tweet by one of the wonderful people I’ve had the pleasure to meet on Twitter. She goes by the handle of ElementsOfJazz and is a big Jazz fan. Her tweets are an entertaining flow of information about Jazz events, music and personalities. If Jazz is your thing, you are doing yourself a disservice if you are not following ElementsOfJazz.
Anyway, a few days ago in one of the many conversations going on about music for Valentine’s Day, ElementsOfJazz asked:
“What is your favorite version of My Funny Valentine?”
Well, if you are into Jazz, you are already familiar with this Jazz standard which, if I remember correctly has been recorded over 1300 times! If you are not familiar with the song, here is some detailed history about the song that I found on JazzStandards.com (very good site, BTW) and an excerpt from the My Funny Valentine Wikipedia article:
“My Funny Valentine” is a show tune from the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart musical Babes in Arms. It is now considered a jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists. The first recorded version of the song to make the charts was by Hal McIntyre with vocals by Ruth Gaylor in 1945. It only appeared for one week and hit #16.The song reemerged in the 1950s and made it to the top of the charts when Chet Baker released a very popular and influential version (released on the album My Funny Valentine / Blue Note Records). His soft, delicate and serene delivery introduced the world to Chet Baker’s singing skills (he was previously known only for his trumpeting skills, also displayed on this recording). Baker is still associated more with “My Funny Valentine” than with any other of the long list of songs he recorded.
Ok, now back to Twitter. So ElementsOfJazz poses the question, and to make it even more interesting she kept a running tally of the responses (sort of like an informal poll) and would update the numbers several times a day. Well, this got me started. First, having a pretty extensive Jazz collection myself, I searched my files to see how many versions I already had. Then it was off to the ‘Net to see what information I could find about other versions of the song. And finally, after immersing myself in all things My Funny Valentine for a couple of days it wasn’t surprising for me to start thinking about making a playlist out of the variety of different versions I had found.
And that, basically, is how we got here to this post and today’s playlist. *smile* What you are about to check out is something I like to call my “A Baker’s Dozen” mix. This is a playlist that consists of thirteen different versions of the same song. It may seem simple but the trick is to choose the different song versions carefully in order to create a listenable flow of music and, most importantly, keep the mix from being BORING! After all there are only so many times someone can listen to the same song over and over again. Well, I believe I have successfully avoided that trap by collecting a wide variety of My Funny Valentine versions from both Jazz and R&B artists (James Ingram’s version is my personal fav, BTW) and sequencing the songs such that you will have an enjoyable time listening to it from beginning all the way to the end. However, only you the listener can be the final judge as to whether I have succeeded or not.
And remember, “Every day is Valentine’s Day for those of us who are basically lovable!”
So, Check out a RIBS baker’s dozen as I present to you:

RIBS TPTD: Cupid’s Hunt 2009 - Have A ‘Jazzy’ Valentine!
Filed under: CupidsHunt, Podcast Collabs, R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey Folks! The Rhythms In Black Satin Cupid’s Hunt 2009 entry *is* on it’s way. Got a little behind schedule due to some other “priorities” last night. *smile* It’ll be worth the wait, I promise!
Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening or whatever time of the day it is where you are while you are reading this. *smile* The Rhythms In Black Satin entry of the Cupid’s Hunt 2009 Podcast Event is finally ready!
However, before we talk about this particular mix, let me just send a shout out and acknowledgment for a job well done to all of the fine and talented podcasters and bloggers who make this thing happen. It is truly enjoyable for me to work with and share my love of music with each and every one of you. And this Valentine’s Day collaboration podcast is so… much… FUN! I was really looking forward to doing it this year and it has not disappointed at all. And even though I know that there is a lot more to go with this current year of 2009, I am already looking forward to our Cupid’s Hunt 2010 collaboration! *smile*
OK, let’s get some RIBS on your plate, shall we? I’m quite sure some of you out there are pretty hungry by now with all of the, um… how shall we say it… “expenditure of energy” that went on last night. *smile* Isn’t great when Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday? You can celebrate Friday night, all day Saturday, all night Saturday night and still make it to church on Sunday. Hmmmmm? Well, some of you anyway. LOL!
Our mix on this day of L-O-V-E is one I am very happy with. Now, I pretty much like all of the mixes posted here on the site, but this one ended up being a very, very nice mix with a smooth flow that I am 100% certain will be the perfect backdrop for your Valentine’s Day celebration. The concept is rather simple, I wanted to take a collection of my favorite Soul/R&B ballads and do a mix, not by the original artists however, but coiver versions by Jazz artists. This way I get to mix my two favorite forms of music: smooth, melodic, soulful slow jams and Jazz. To be honest, I like this mix so much that I’ve been playing it constantly all week long. And now I get to share it with you!
So… let’s get jazzy and romantic all at the same time, shall we, as you enjoy the Cupid’s Hunt 2009 Valentine’s Day extravaganza. We now present to you:
Cupid’s Hunt 2009 - “Have A ‘Jazzy’ Valentine!”

Somehow I don’t think it’s over yet, as a matter of fact I KNOW it isn’t. *smile* Keep checking back here at RIBS and listening in on Twitter for even more Cupid’s Hunt Valentine’s weekend musical goodies!
UPDATE #2:
We told you it was not over yet. AAMOF, one of the primary movers and shakers of the SuperFriends of Podcasting, her “Royal Highness” as I like to call her, DJ Diva, The Mixtress of R&B, was conspicuously absent yesterday. She had not been heard from since late Friday and we were left wondering what had happened. Was something wrong? Did she suddenly decide to quit podcasting? Of course, since it *was* Valentine’s Day, one of the SuperFriends (who shall remain nameless *smile*) speculated that her loving husband, The Political Assistant sent the twins away for the weekend and he had her ever so slightly restrained with red satin rope and was feeding her strawberries and whipped cream. LOL!
ANYWAY, as it turns out DJ Diva’s Cupid’s Hunt contribution got slightly delayed by some of the unexpected twists and turns of this thing called LIFE and then she chose to spend some quality time on V-Day with her family. And can’t nobody be mad at or question that choice!
So with all of that said Cupid’s Hunt now has its 20th mix available for your listening pleasure. And here’s a teaser: there will be at least 21 mixes (maybe even 22) You just gotta keep checking in here at Cupid’s Hunt HQ 2009!
18. DJ Diva - The Mixtress Of R&B: “Cupid’s Hunt: 80s Ladies Love”
UPDATE #3:
As I alluded to earlier, here is mix #21 in our Cupid’s Hunt Valentine’s Day celebration. A little something I was inspired to throw together that grew out of a V-Day/music conversation on Twitter.
19. TGrundy - RIBS: “Cupid’s Hunt: My Funny Valentine-A Baker’s Dozen”

RIBS TPTD: When Love Calls - The ‘Heavenly’ Mix…
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Hey, welcome back to the RIBS kitchen! I hope you’re hungry… *smile*
Here’s an idea that popped into my head a few weeks ago, just about out of nowhere it seemed. Today’s buffet is a heavenly mix of songs… literally. I got to thinking about songs with the word “heaven” in them and, even though initially I didn’t think there would be that many, it turns out that I was able to find more than just a handful. This mix actually turned out much, much better than I thought it would. It’s a nice collection of sounds from a diverse group of artists including: Coke Escovedo, Luther Vandross, Seal, The Spinners, Gerald Levert, Teddy Pendergrass, The Dramatics and Roberta Flack just to name a few.
So while we are still just a little less than 48 hours away from the big Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Event, let this mix of “Heavenly” sounds tide you over as we present to you…
