RIBS TPTD: Freddie Hubbard, R.I.P.

*sigh* I was hoping that after we heard about Eartha Kitt’s passing on Christmas Day that we were finished losing our great artists and entertainers for 2008. We’ve lost so many this year: Isaac Hayes, Bernie Mac, Dee Dee Warwick, Odetta, Bo Diddley, Mariam Makeba, Levi Stubbs, Norman Whitfield to name a few.

Unfortunately we now have to add Frederick Dewyane Hubbard, better known as jazz trumpeter extraordinaire Freddie Hubbard, to that list.

There are a lot of words that come to mind at a time like this but they are just a jumble of thoughts right now. Perhaps I’ll come back a little later and add them. At this moment let’s just say that Freddie, along with Miles Davis, was probably one of the major influences on the majority of the horn players that are out today.

‘Nuff said for now. Let’s let the gift of music that he’s left behind say the rest as we present to you…

RIBS TPTD: A “Gospel” Christmas…

One last “Sounds of the Season” mix from RIBS for the 2008 holidays.

I was actually trying to finish this one in time for posting on Christmas Day but with all of the family activities (and “honey-do” *smile*) of the 24th and 25th I just ran out of time. And yeah I know, I know what some of ya’ll are saying… geesh, TGrundy, it’s after Christmas, enough with the Christmas music already.

To that I say… haven’t we all, at one time or another, said and/or felt we wish it could be Christmas everyday?

Also, don’t let the word “gospel” in the mix title fool you. While not exactly the Kirk Franklin “Stomp” type of gospel, the mix is far from the more traditional Mahalia Jackson gospel sound also (I say that with absolutely NO DISRESPECT towards Mahalia, one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived) With 1 or 2 exceptions the majority of the selections in the mix fall in the Contemporary Gospel category as there are selections from Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Mary Mary and Sandra Crouch and many more.

So, for the Sunday after Christmas here in 2008 RIBS presents to you:

RIBS TPTD: “Merry Christmas, Baby” - A Baker’s Dozen…

December 18, 2008 by tgrundy · 3 Comments

More “Sounds of the Season” from RIBS!

Today we’re doing something a little different. You may like it or hate it, we’ll have to see…

I’ve been asked by a few folks this month what my favorite Christmas song is, and I’ve answered without hesitation Luther Vandross’ “Every Year, Every Christmas”. However, my second favorite Christmas song is the subject of our mix today, the Christmas classic, “Merry Christmas, Baby”. Originally done by Charles Brown this song has been covered by just about EVERYBODY it seems whenever they perform a set of Christmas music.

So… I got to thinkin’ one day, “Just how many versions of this song are there?” Well, the answer is: “A lot!” *smile*

Now, often a DJ will take a couple of versions of a song, the original and a cover version and play them back to back so you can contrast and compare them to one another. Well today we’re taking 13 (that’s the “baker’s dozen” part of the title) and presenting them to you all in one mix. Yeah, yeah I know sounds kinda boring doesn’t it. Well, I’ve labored long and hard to find versions that were different enough so that it wouldn’t be repetitive, BUT… you have to be the judge of that.

Without further ado, RIBS’ Sounds of the Season presents to you:

RIBS TPTD: A ‘Funky’ Christmas…

Ahhh… Christmas time and Christmas music! Next to the start of the baseball season it’s my favorite time of year.

As promised, we’re continuing to give you the “Sounds of the Season” here on RIBS. This week we leave behind the sad/broken-hearted side of Christmas that (unfortunately) many folks experience during the holiday season and turn our attention to a little Christmas “soul music”. And not just any old soulful renditions of Christmas songs, but songs with a funky beat that you could party and dance to while getting your holiday spirit (or “spirits” *smile*) on!

Hopefully you will enjoy this collection that I call…

A ‘Funky’ Christmas!

…and don’t worry, it’s NOT a bunch of the same old uptempo R&B Christmas tunes that we usually hear over and over and over again on the radio!

RIBS TPTD: A Lonely Christmas…

December 4, 2008 by tgrundy · 4 Comments
Filed under: Holiday, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, Xmas, blues, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul

Ahhh… the holiday season is upon us!

Just as we did around here last year, the month of December is going to be devoted to what we like to call the ‘Sounds of the Season’. From now until the beginning of the year the mixes here on RIBS will be a variety of “themed” Christmas music from a number of different genres: Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Blues and maybe even a little Pop and/or Rock too.

First up is my favorite mix from this time last year that I wanted to present here again, not only because I like it so much, but because there are a number of you (perhaps most of you {smile}) who missed it back then because you didn’t know this place existed. Here’s the original intro…

Christmas time. For many folks it’s the happiest time of year. However, for many others it can also be the saddest time of year.

I have always thought that it was ironic that some of the most beautiful (to me at least) Christmas songs were the ones about being sad and/or broken-hearted at this time of year. This week during our month-long look at the ‘Sounds of the Season’ here at RIBS we look at the other side of Christmas…

…and present to you:

A Lonely Christmas!
