RIBS TPTD: The Dells Sing Dionne Warwick…
Filed under: RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
You know… I really hope you enjoy listening to today’s playlist as much as I have {smile}. Truthfully, this is one of those sets of music that I could go on and on talking about forever, so I’ll try to be brief so you can get right to the music.
First off, “BIG PROPS” to Soulbrotha and the rest of the 4BB (plus 2) crew over at the FourBrothersBeats blog for turning me on to the Dells disc being featured today which, in turn, gave me the inspiration for today’s TPTD mix. What a bunch of passionate/intelligent music lovers those guys are. One of my favorite spots on the the ‘Net for sure!
Now (I know, I know I said I would try to be brief, bear with me now!), the Dells disc that is the foundation for today’s RIBS is:
The Dells Sing Dionne Warwick’s Greatest Hits
Click on the above link to pop over to the 4BB site to check out what is so great about this album. Yes it’s an disc of cover versions, but they are so creatively executed by the wonderful voices of this all-time great soul group that you’ll get lost in the music!
Now the way my mind mind works (no comments, please! {smile}), one of the first things I thought about after listening to (and being absolutely blown away by) this disc was:
“Hmmm, I wonder how these would compare when played back-to-back with the originals?”
And thus… a new RIBS TPTD mix was born!
OK, ’nuff said. Check it out for yourself:

Ah… back in the game and feeling good!
With “awful April” well behind me now, things are looking better and better with each passing day. I was going to go with the traditional “Triple Play” format today, but I started messing around with a few songs and ended up with this particular set of tunes that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. For today’s playlist, I’m doing something that I haven’t done in a while… a little beatmixing. The time was the early to mid 80s, Disco had taken over the land for a few years back then and the music was pumpin’ and the clubs were jumpin’! Yours truly had just finished college and relocated from Beantown back home to NJ and was working, single and DJing on the side. Whoo-Hoo, those were the days! A lot of today’s selections are tunes me and the crew used to party to back in the day when the J-O-B ended at 5pm, the party started at Midnight and the last stop before calling it a night was the local diner for breakfast around 5 in the morning.
Oh, one thing before we get to the music. I struggled for a minute trying to figure out what to call this mix, since it isn’t in the regular TPTD format (which are really easy to name). In the end, I had one of those Homer Simpson, “DOH!”, moments as it was staring right in front of me all the time. As you will hear when you download the podcast file, this mix is a little different than any of my previous mixes in the fact that there are a few “vocal drops” sprinkled throughout the mix. Credit for this goes out to my man, Fave (FridayFavecast.com) who made the suggestion to the “SoulSites Podiverse” crew last month that we all create promotional “drops” (he calls it the Drop Swap) for each other. Unfortunately, at the time April was kicking my you-know-what and I’m a little late getting my drops done for my fellow podcast fam (they are coming though, that’s a promise!). However, many of the fam members came through for your boy here and the mix includes drops from my partners-in-podcasting: EJFlavors, Fave and Mr. Fresh. So I… got a little help from my friends! Very appropriate and fitting. This will be a regular feature of the mixes from now on and you will be hearing many of the other voices from the “Podiverse” in the mix in the future.
OK! Let’s get the party started as I present to you a little:

RIBS TPTD: Al Wilson - R.I.P.
Aaannnndddd… We’re back!
Sorry for the lack of activity here (and on NetInfoWeb) lately. Had a rough patch of time there during the month of April. Anyway, I’ll go into some details of all of it at a later time. Right now, we’re back (to stay) so let’s get right into the music…
Do you remember Al Wilson? He had a monster soul hit in the early 70’s titled, “Show And Tell”. One of the classic soul songs of all time. Unfortunately, Al passed away last week (Monday, April 21, 2008) at the age of 68 from kidney failure. Unlike some of our other soul singers who had gained a larger measure of fame, Al’s passing went by almost unnoticed. I did see something on a couple of blogs (AAMOF that is how I found out about it this past Monday) and there were some reports in the news media when it happened, but for the most part… nothing.
Well, that’s not how we do thing around here. “Show And Tell” is of those “Soundtrack Of My Life” songs that always evokes found memories of my youth and the days when I first started to really get into Soul music and understand/experience it’s depth of beauty and passion. So today, here on Rhythms In Black Satin, we pause for a moment to honor the memory and legacy of one of Soul music’s outstanding voices as we present to you:

New RIBS Mix… Finally!
Filed under: R&B, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
A quick “Heads Up”… there *will* be a new RIBS Triple Play Thurs-Day mix posted today!
Sorry that it’s been so quiet around here lately, but the month of April has not been kind to me. That’s why I’m over here singing “TGIM” to myself (”Thank God It’s May!) {smile}. Anyway, it’ll be dropping a little bit later this morning, just finishing up the last few final touches.
Hey, I’m back! (and it feels great!) See ya in a bit…
