RIBS JSOB: Stanley, Koko and ZZ…
Filed under: JSOB, JazzWithASideOrderOfBlues, RIBS, blues, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes
Mix number four in our “Jazz with a Side Order of Blues” (JSOB) series is now ready to satiate your Jazz/Blues hunger pains. Remember, JSOB comes your way every two weeks on Tuesdays.
I have to admit, I’m really enjoying this series and creating these mixes. It really allows (i.e. forces) me to delve much more deeply into a genre of music (Blues) that I have always enjoyed but, unlike Funk or Soul/RnB, was not as familiar with as I would have liked to (or should have) been.
Today we feature one of the masters of my favorite Jazz instrument: the saxophone, along with the woman who is billed as the “Queen of the Blues”, and a man who was an instrumental part of the “back to the Blues” movement in the early 80’s (especially with the work he did for Malaco Records). This week we present to you the JSOB mix number four with:

RIBS TPTD: Songs For My Father - Ray, Sam and Lou…
Filed under: RIBS, TSOYL, Triple Play Thurs-Day, blues, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
They say, “Good things come to those who wait”. That’s how I’m hoping you’ll feel about today’s Triple Play Thurs-Day mix, since it’s so late getting posted to the site {smile}.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m going really old school this week with a series that I think I’ll run from time to time over the next several months. This one is called “Songs For My Father” (SFMF) and these are artists and/or songs that I grew up listening to when my dad would sit down long enough to play some records. Usually it was on a Sunday morning or early Sunday afternoon and when dad headed to the record player I just knew that one of our featured artists today would be the first thing he played, with the other two sure to follow.
Today you might call the cuts you’re about to hear “old school” or “classic soul” or “oldies”. Funny, but this stuff sounds just as fresh and new to me now as it did back then when I was watching daddy rifle through a few stacks of 45’s looking for his favorite songs.
Come with me please and take a journey back in time to some of the most pleasant and enjoyable memories of my childhood. Sit back, relax and enjoy Poppa Grundy’s three favorite artists as this week I present to you the first in the series I call “Songs For My Father”:

RIBS TPTD: Bonus Hours - Buddy Miles-RIP
Filed under: Funk, R&B, RIBS, Rock, Triple Play Thurs-Day, blues, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Funk/Rock drummer Buddy Miles passed away last week on Tuesday, February 26th, 2008. Best known for his work/collaboration with Jimi Hendrix as a member of the Band of Gypsys, Buddy (as I only found out while reading his obituary) was also the lead vocalist in the 1987 California Raisins ad campaign created by the California Raisin Advisory Board.
While I will admit that I am no expert on his music, I have always been a big fan of what many consider to be his signature song: “Them Changes”. Whether it was Rock, Funk, Blues, RnB or Soul, Buddy was truly a gifted musician, songwriter and bandleader.
So… in remembrance, one last time “let’s give the drummer some” as we present to you:

The third mix in our new series “Jazz with a Side Order of Blues” (JSOB) is here for your musical consumption. Remember, JSOB comes your way every two weeks on Tuesdays.
For today’s entre we grabbed one part Jazz and two parts of Blues for you and mixed together one of classiest ladies of Jazz and Soul, one of the smoothest crooners (IMHO) who belted out Blues, Soul, and RnB, and one of my favorite sassy ladies of the blues.
This week we present to you the third JSOB mix with:
