RIBS TPTD: Bonus Hours - Sly and the Family Stone, Part 1

Sly. Sylvester Stewart. Sly Stone. Sly and the Family Stone!

In addition to being a landmark group who’s musical influences are still being heard today this is my number one, all-time favorite group! Considering that their actual discography of original material is rather small (when compared to a lot of groups) it makes their long lasting impact on the music world that much more significant.

As an example, in the preface of his 1998 book For the Record: Sly and the Family Stone: An Oral History, Joel Selvin sums up the importance of Sly and the Family Stone’s influence on African American music by stating:

“there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone”

There is a lot more I want to (and will) say about this group, but time is tight at the moment. Check back later today for some more thoughts and commentary. Now on to the music.

This week I present to you my all-time favorite band…

Sly and the Family Stone

I began listening to Sly when anly a few of my friends knew anything about him. My very first purchase with my own money was the “Dance to the Music” lp. At that time, his music was what people called “an acquired taste.” So far, a whole lot of people have that taste in ther mouths.
My fav lp’s are “Stand” & “There’s a Riot Going On”. These two show Sly at his grittiest and funkiest to me.
