RIBS TPTD: Bonus Hours - Graham Central Station
OK, quiz time again. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name “Larry Graham”?
Well… (and here comes another one of those ‘old school’/'new school’ comparisons {smile}) if you are under 50 what you probably think of is the monster R&B ballad, “One In A Million You” that he released in 1980 as a solo artist. If you are over 50 you probably best remember him as the bass player for one of the all-time great soul/funk bands Sly and the Family Stone.
However, right after the breakup of S&FS Larry had another funk band that sometimes gets lost and/or forgotten about in the discussion of really good 70’s funk music. As much of a fan I am of his years with Sly (I mean does it really get much better than Dance To The Music, I Want To Take You Higher, or Sex Machine?) I was really deep, deep into what people often refer to as Larry’s “other” band. Well, that “other” band produced some mighty intense funk and could also break off a nice, mellow ballad too as well as some finger-poppin’ Do-Wop every now and then.
With Valentine’s Day and the many, many Cupid’s Hunt love podcasts just around the corner I felt we all needed something fast and something funky to take us into this weekend. AAMOF, I have to admit… this one is HOT!
This week I present to you Larry Graham’s “other” band…

I had to get an early start. I posted my Valentine Mix yesterday. It’s for the “Dusty Soul” lovers like myself and many others… Check it out and let me know what you think. Aldo when you get those links for the other mixes forward them on so I can help promote the Love.
