Part 2 of our look at Sly and the Family Stone here on RIBS.

When you take a look at the history of the group you find out that there were two distinct eras in their career, 1967-1971 and 1973-1983. In Part 1 last week we presented most of the classic hits that you normally think of when you hear the name Sly and the Family Stone: Dance to The Music, Stand!, I Want To Take You Higher, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), etc. This material was recorded during their heyday between the years 1967 and 1971.

The majority of today’s mix on the other hand is from the later decade of the group’s career, 1973-1983. This material, while still very good and bearing many of the distinctive characteristics of the SATFS sound, doesn’t quite match the output of their early years. The lone exceptions may be the songs from the 1973 release Fresh: If You Want Me To Stay, In Time, Let Me Have It All, Frisky, their cover of Doris Day’s Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) and Skin I’m In. This album has even been hailed by some “as one of the great funk albums of it’s era”.

Unfortunately, as we have witnessed with so many artists and groups, along with the success and fame that the group attained came many problems. Problems that would tear the group apart and lead to their downfall. The “transition years” between the group’s two eras, 1971-1972, were particularly troublesome and saw relationships among the band members deteriorate, demands from outside parties that the band’s music become more militant and calls to replace the white members of the group, Greg Errico and Jerry Martini with black instrumentalists. Additionally, Sly and the rest of the band became heavy users of illegal drugs. All of this eventually took its toll. Drummer Greg Errico left in 1971. Larry Graham, who had been having disagreements and issues with Sly and his brother Freddie for some time, left in 1972 after a post-concert brawl broke out between Graham’s entourage and Sly’s entourage. Sly’s sister, Rose Stone got married and eventually left the group in 1975.

Now, with all that being said, it is still important to make note of the fact that the latter work of Sly and the Family was just as important and influential in the world of music as their early work. During their career this group broke so many molds and spearheaded many changes in the way music was created and perceived. They were the first (or at least one of the first) major bands to be mixed in both race and gender. As a matter of fact, the first woman I recall seeing in a band who actually played an instrument (and trumpet at that) and wasn’t just a background singer or “eye-candy” was Cynthia Robinson.

Their sound was a mixture of RnB, Soul and Rock, not a common combination back in those days. And the bass… you had never heard the the bass guitar played before like Larry Graham played it in Sly and the Family Stone! He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass, although he himself refers to the technique as Thumpin’ and Pluckin’. In addition to influencing an entire generation of bass players, the sound of Sly and the Family Stone influenced Herbie Hancock, resulting in his landmark Head Hunters release in 1973, and Miles Davis’ On The Corner, which heralded the era of Jazz fusion. Artists from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Prince and Chuck D have all gained inspiration from SATFS.

So… this week, once again, I present to you my all-time favorite band…

RIBS TPTD: Bonus Hours - Sly and the Family Stone, Part 1

Sly. Sylvester Stewart. Sly Stone. Sly and the Family Stone!

In addition to being a landmark group who’s musical influences are still being heard today this is my number one, all-time favorite group! Considering that their actual discography of original material is rather small (when compared to a lot of groups) it makes their long lasting impact on the music world that much more significant.

As an example, in the preface of his 1998 book For the Record: Sly and the Family Stone: An Oral History, Joel Selvin sums up the importance of Sly and the Family Stone’s influence on African American music by stating:

“there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone”

There is a lot more I want to (and will) say about this group, but time is tight at the moment. Check back later today for some more thoughts and commentary. Now on to the music.

This week I present to you my all-time favorite band…

RIBS JSOB: George, Grover and Etta

You may have missed it, especially with all of the conversation and activity surrounding the Cupid’s Hunt Valentine’s Day event, but two weeks ago I unveiled a new mix/podcast format here on RIBS called:

Jazz with a Side Order of Blues (or JSOB for short).

This is a Jazz/Blues mix that will be posted every two weeks on Tuesdays (seems that Tuesday is the only day of the week that currently does not have a regular, weekly podcast associated with it; any takers {smile}).

So… this week we present to you the second JSOB mix with:

  1. George Benson
  2. Grover Washington, Jr.

RIBS TPTD: Cupid’s Hunt - Old School Slow Jams - Mix 4

February 17, 2008 by tgrundy · 1 Comment
Filed under: Funk, General/Misc, RIBS, Triple Play Thurs-Day, music, podcasts/mixes, soul

The fourth and final mix of the “4 mixes in 4 days” Valentine’s Weekend music marathon here on RIBS.

Well, here it is, we have come to the climax of this particular celebration. And as I relax here and bask in the afterglow of the past fews days’ events I am overcome with that feeling of total relaxation and satisfaction that only the most pleasurable experiences can provide.

I’d like to thank all of the bloggers and podcasters who gave of their time and effort to make the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast event happen. As I have mentioned, it truly was an event that unfolded and was executed far, far better than I could have ever imagined. Just think, it all started with a small, rather innocent question to a fellow podcaster a few weeks ago about whether or not he was going to create a mix for Valentine’s Day. That was followed by a tweet on Twitter and, as the say, the rest is history.

As for this final mix, some folks have inquired as to why I’m doing so many mixes this weekend. Am I crazy? Well, the short answer is, “Yes. Yes I am.” {smile} The truth of the matter is that these songs and these mixes are my own personal time machine. They take me back not only to various times and places and people along the “Soundtrack of My Life”, but to my two best friends in college, the “Garrett Kid” and the “Mighty O”. They especially take me back to that now far away weekend in June of 2006 when the 3 of us reconnected for one more memorable, magic moment (even though physically we were hundreds of miles apart) to talk trash, play music and enjoy one another’s company.

I raise my glass in a toast. A toast to my friends “GK” & “MO”, I love you guys more than words can ever express. A toast to my “Podiverse” peeps, you guys are so important to me, perhaps more than you’ll ever know. And last, but not least, a toast to Love… and all that it does to us and does for us, both good and bad. There really is nothing quite like it.

Now, on to the music…

RIBS TPTD: Cupid’s Hunt - Old School Slow Jams - Mix 1

First of all, let me wish you a very, very “Happy Valentine’s Day!”

Man, oh, man! This is gonna be a day to remember. Valentine’s Day 2008. The debut of what I hope will be an annual event online:

Cupid’s Hunt - “Looking for podcasts… in all the right places!”

Check in over at the main site, NetInfoWeb.com for updates throughout the day today on the festivities.

In the meantime, let’s get started with my contribution to the party. Actually, it is the first of 4 Cupid’s Hunt mixes we’ll be presenting to you here on RIBS. In our mind it’s not just Valentine’s “Day” but rather Valentine’s “Weekend”. And with that in mind we’re doing another one of our “mix marathons” all weekend long. Starting today all the way through Sunday we’ll be giving you…

Old School Slow Jams

…all total, almost five hours of some of my favorite slow jams from back-in-the-day when I was DJing and hanging out in college. Lots of stuff: some good love, some bad love, some rich love, some poor love, mostly from the early to mid-70s, with a little 60s and some early 80s thrown in to keep the vibe going.

One thing I do want to do before we get into the music is publicly thank my two best friends from college (I’ll call them by their nicknames from back then): “The Garrett Kid” and the “Mighty O”.

The song selections I’ll be sharing with you today and over the weekend were actually generated almost two summers ago back in June of 2006. I had recently reconnected with my two college friends after too many years apart and we decided to play a musical game of “can you top this”. The rules were that we would each take turns selecting 3 “slow jams” from our college days. The great thing about it was that the three of us were in different areas of the country and this game was played out via email! Well, the battle (and the trash talking!) went on for three days over one weekend from Friday noon till sometime late Monday morning. In the end we ended up with over 60 songs and one hell of a playlist.

Ever since then I’ve been looking for just the right opportunity to publish the results and now, with the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Event, this is the perfect time!

So… a toast and a heartfelt “Thank you!” to my two best friends from college, The Garrett Kid and the Mighty O. This edition of RIBS could not have happened without you!

Now, without further ado… “Let’s get busy!”
