RIBS TPTD: T-Connection, Pockets & Pleasure
Some Funk and Ballads are on the Triple Play Thurs-Day menu this week. Three bands that, while not household names, had a measure of success back in the day and, on top of that, were particular favorites of yours truly.
This week we present to you:
T-Connection: Whenever I think of T-Connection I always remember their single “Do What You Wanna Do” from their debut album ‘Magic’ and the mix one of my friends, Eddie “Starchild” Miller did of the song with a flange effect added to it. Of course this was “back in the day” when we had to work this magic with a couple of precisely matched turntables, a light touch and a good ear. And Starchild had a great ear for music! Always a great party song back in the day.
Originally hailing from the Bahamas, T-Connection enjoyed a pretty good run until disbanding in the mid-80s. They enjoyed success with a number of tunes such as At Midnight, Saturday Night, On Fire and Let Yourself go.
Pockets: This is a group I have always really enjoyed. They have one of those sounds that I just never get tired of listening to. Unfortunately, even through they were produced by Verdine White (of Earth, Wind & Fire fame), their run was very short lived producing only three albums: Come Go With Us (their best of the the three), Take It On Up and So Delicious between 1977 and 1979. Their standout tracks are “Come Go With Me”, Pasado (originally done by The Stairsteps) and the beautiful ballad “Elusive Lady”.
Unless you already have them on vinyl these albums may be pretty hard to find. Fortunately, there is a
Pockets, Golden Classics disc available that contains all of their best songs.
Pleasure: This was, IMHO, always a fun group to groove to. Their sound was a mixture of Soul, Funk and Jazz, and you can tell they had a lot of fun doing it. Along the way they left us with plenty of great music: “Joyous” (I can listen to this one over and over and over again!), “Glide”, a cover of “Midnight At The Oasis”, “Let Me Be The One” and “Sassafras Girl” (a very jazzy, mid-tempo ballad).
