Wait a minute… let me put my sunglasses on. That’s the law around here, you got to wear your sunglasses. So you can feel cool!
OK! IT’S TIME TO GET ON DOWN AND GET FUNKY!
It’s the Labor Day holiday weekend. The “unofficial” end of summer where everybody’s grabbing that last little bit of rest and relaxation before getting back into the regular routine of the daily grind. Well, we want to carry you through the weekend with a cruise on the Mothership, baby!
George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell and the rest of the gang are gonna take us on a weekend-long, 5-day funk fest of the music of Parliament-Funkadelic and many other members of the P-Funk family. Parlet, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, The Brides Of Funkenstein, Fred Wesley & Maceo Parker, the Sweat Band, Godmoma… we gonna be chompin’ down on some FUNK & RIBS all weekend!
Today we kick things off with some of my favorite, P-Funk tunes that I have partied to over the years (AAMOF, I’m sure you’ve heard them a time or two yourself! {smile}). Friday, the psychedelic, funk-rock rhythms of Funkadelic take center stage, and on Saturday we take a look at some of the offshoot groups that Dr. Funkenstein created during the heyday of the P-Funk empire.
Soooooo…. we’re ridin’ on the Mothership all weekend long. We present to you the first part of a whole weekend of FUNK:
George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelic family!

RIBS TPTD: Jon Lucien - In Memorium…
{TG’s Notes (08/24/07): this was originally supposed to be a 2-mix post, however the second mix took a little longer to pull together than I anticipated. It is ready now and has been added below the first mix at the section labeled Addendum…}
There’s an old saying in the entertainment industry…
“Actors want to sing, and singers want to act.”
I think the same holds true for DJs. Many of us want to be a featured soloist in the band, laying down an awesome rift on the guitar or saxophone (my two favorite instruments, BTW) or on stage belting out a sweet love song that makes the ladies swoon.
That’s always been my dream. But, as they say, those that can (sing, dance or play an instrument) do, those that can’t become DJs! {smile}. Oh, but if I could sing, I’ve always wanted to have a voice like today’s featured artist, the late, great Jon Lucien, who unfortunately left us to join the Heavenly Choir on Saturday August 18, 2007. Now, of course, this is not to slight the other great male vocalists of our time: Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Isaac Hayes, and Barry White to name a few. But for my money, Lord if I get to live life over again, please give me Jon Lucien’s singing voice!
While he never attained that “superstar” or “household name” status nor had huge commercial success in album sales, those of us who followed Jazz knew that Jon was a talented writer, producer and instrumentalist as well as a gifted vocalist with a style that, at the time (early to mid-70s), defied description. In actuality, Jon Lucien was pioneering the sound that has now become known as “Smooth Jazz”, long before anybody knew what it was!
There have been quite a few reports in the media this week about his passing. I found this one in the Washington Post the most informative. It’s amazing the variety of things you sometimes find out about these entertainers when they pass away. I never knew Jon battled cocaine addiction, was married and divorced 3 times before finding happiness with his fourth wife, Delesa, and lost a baby daughter in 1980 in a swimming pool accident. On top of all that, his 17-year old daughter, Dalila, was killed in the TWA Flight 800 when it exploded and crashed off of Long Island in 1996. How a parent can survive the traumatic experience of burying a child, let alone two is beyond me. I hope that’s a test I never have to take.
Anyway, I’m starting to ramble, it’s just that the news of Jon’s passing hit me sort of hard. These days 65 years old is still to young (IMHO) to be dying and the news about Jon caught me off guard. Although, now that I think about it, if you go to his website and look at the picture gallery and compare recent photos of him to those from about 5-10 years ago, you can see that he was not in the best of health. I guess that is one of those famous “20-20 hindsight” types of observations.
As always in situations like these, the one positive is the rich legacy of music he has left behind for us to enjoy. And as long as there is someone, somewhere in the world listening to or absentmindedly humming one of Jon’s compositions, then he’ll never truly be gone! This week we present to you:

RIBS TPTD: Labelle-Patti, Nona and Sarah
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Labelle.
Now when most people hear this name the first person that probably comes to mind is Patti LaBelle (with a capital ‘B’ in the name). Rightfully so, as she has established herself as one of this generation’s truly talented and dynamic entertainers.
And while most people do remember that Patti was the leader of the group that bears her name, Labelle (with a small ‘b’), many would be hard pressed to recall any songs they made outside of “Lady Marmalade”, the smash hit that put the group on the map and sent them hurtling down the road to stardom.
Labelle: Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash.
I have to admit, as much as I love Patti and have enormous respect and admiration for her work as a solo artist, there’s a part of me that still misses Labelle, the group. They looked different. They sounded different. They were different. I really don’t believe that they have been given enough credit for breaking the cookie-cutter mold of the typical “girl group” that was prevalent during the 50s and 60s (actually that recognition should probably go to their manager, Vicki Wickham, who renamed the group to Labelle [from Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles], pushed them to a more contemporary funk-rock sound, and completely overhauled their image to include glam influences, including their spectacular space age stage costumes full of glitter, feathers and other accoutrements).
So, this week the RIBS Triple Play Thurs-Day turns it’s focus on Labelle, the group, so you can remember once again what a great sound these three ladies produced together. Our selections come from the last 4 albums that they made before the group broke up:
![]() Pressure Cookin’ (1973) |
![]() Nightbirds (1974) contains the hit “Lady Marmalade” |
![]() Phoenix (1975) worth searching for |
![]() Chameleon (1976) their last effort together |
Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you:

RIBS TPTD: Ronnie Laws, Steely Dan, Jon Lucien
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Late drop today, but I hope you feel it’s worth the wait…
Sometimes when trying to come up with an idea for Triple Play Thurs-Day I like to push the envelope (so to speak) and pull together three artists that, at first glance, you wouldn’t think would mix well together. My best effort to date along that line was the Hugh Masekela-Bobby McFerrin-John Coltrane mix back in March that started off this weekly TPTD feature here. I cannot even begin to tell you how long it took me to put that one together… let’s just say it was months… many, many months.
Anyway, I decided to challenge myself again this week, as I was in the mood for something a little different. I’ve been listening to and/or hearing selections from today’s trio off and on for a couple of weeks now and I figured, what the hell, let’s see if we can flow these three into a decent sounding mix.
So… for this week’s TPTD we present, IMHO, three unlikely bedfellows:
Ronnie Laws, he of the famous and talented Laws family (older brother Hubert and sisters Debra and Eloise), has always been one of my favorite saxophone players. While not quite attaining the recognition and/or “household name” status of some of his peers, Grover Washington, Jr. or David Sanborn for example, I think his talent ranks right up there with the best of them. His debut album as a solo artist, Pressure Sensitive, with the monster hit Always There, still gets pulled out from time to time and is enjoyed as much now as when it first came out.
If Steely Dan had only recorded the Aja album and nothing else, I would still have been a happy fan forever. Let me put it this way, I’ve had to purchase multiple copies of this disk over the years cause I’ve worn out my copy from playing it so much. This, IMHO, has to be the pinnacle achievement of their recording career. The title track Aja never fails to float me away on a bed of sound and ease my mind of burdens troubling it. The only other song I can think of that has always had this type of effect on me is Deliver The Word by WAR (hmmmm… have to remember to put those two in a mix back-to-back someday, that’ll sound real nice I think). And then… there is the cut I consider my theme song, Deacon Blues:
They have a name for the winners in the world,
I want a name when I lose.
They call Alabama the “Crimson Tide”,
Call me “Deacon Blues”.
How *many* times have I been there and lived those lines… {sigh}
Last, but not least (not by any stretch of the imagination) is Jon Lucien. This man possesses one of the most beautifully melodic (that’s the only way I can think to describe it) singing voices I have ever heard. This man could sing Chopsticks (if it had lyrics, of course {smile}) and I think I would just sit there spellbound and hang on every note. As a matter of fact, even though Jon’s selections in this mix are some of my favorites, especially Lady Love and Rashida (which, now that I think about it, ranks right up there with Aja and Deliver The Word), these few songs don’t really do him the justice that he deserves. I have a feeling RIBS will be doing an all Jon Lucien feature mix sometime in the not-too-distant future.
