RIBS TPTD: Angela Bofill, Prayers For An Angel…
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Gonna take time out from the normal Triple Play Thurs-Day format (again) to do a feature on one of my favorite artists who is going through some hard times right now…
A couple of weeks ago I saw on the Yahoo! Group classicsoulmusic70sstyle where Angela Bofill had suffered a second major stroke on July 10 of this year. She was already trying to recover from a stroke suffered in January, 2006 when this second one occurred. According to the information on her website, AngelaBofill.com, her condition at the time was listed as critical. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate any additional and/or updated information since. Complicating this situation is the fact that Ms. Bofill did not have any health insurance at the time of the first stroke.
(Update: just checked the classicsoulmusic70sstyle group while writing this and there *is* an update on her condition on BAW: BlackAmericaWeb.com; “She was in intensive care for the first week, but she is now out of the danger zone”, according to her manager Rich Engel. Very welcome news indeed!)
Of course, as anyone who has had a major health issue like this knows, recovery takes a long time and is very expensive. If you want to help her manager stated:
“She still has no insurance. We raised about $23,000 with a benefit in Detroit in March. All of that is gone now,” he said. “The best way fans and friends can support her is to buy a copy of ‘Angela Bofill: Live In Manila.’ It’s done on our own label, Black Angel, and the money will benefit Angie.”
Additionally, if you want to make a direct contribution, there is a “Donation” link on the website also.
Anyway, while following this story it occurred to me that too many times on sites like this we’ll celebrate the music of our entertainers “in memoriam” after they are dead and gone. Luther, Gerald and James are just a few of the names that come to mind. As a matter of fact, back in December when JB unexpectedly passed and I put together a couple of tribute mixes in honor of the Godfather of Soul, I recall having a conversation with a co-worker who said to me, “Let’s not wait until George (Clinton) passes to put together a Parliament-Funkadelic mix”. That statement struck me and I’ve never forgotten it. For weeks afterward I kept thinking that it would be so much better to create these mixes and celebrate these entertainers while they are still here instead of after they’ve passed on to “Soul Heaven”.
So it is with that thought in mind that I put together this week’s TPTD mix to honor the one we call the “Angel of the Night”, Angela Bofill, as we hope and pray for her recovery from these health setbacks.
This week I present to you…
Prayers For An Angel:
In keeping with the “triple play” theme of the day, the majority of the songs in the mix hail from the following three releases:
- Angie, her initial release in 1978
- Too Tough, her fourth album in 1983
- Love In Slow Motion, from 1996
Additionally, a few selections have been taken from:
Angel Of The Night, her second album (1979), and the Best Of Angela Bofill release (1986) on Arista Records.

RIBS TPTD: Commodores, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Jackson 5…

OK! The TPTD IS BACK!
After a couple of weeks of being on the disabled list, I am very happy to get back into the swing of things and post a new Triple Play Thurs-Day mix. This week we take a listen to some familiar, as a matter of fact make that HUGE, names in the R&B/Soul music industry. However, as we like to do here at RIBS, we’ll do it in a slightly different way.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the Soundtrack Of My Life (a theme I’ve touched on before here) and I about why and how some of the groups and artists that we know and love achieved that level of status in our hearts and minds. Our trio this week definitely falls into this category, so I figured I would go back to some of their early releases and take a look back at some of their initial efforts.
So, this week we take a trip back to the beginning, back to the early releases of these groups (just before they hit it really big) and sample some of the music they created that hooked us and made us fall in love with them. Therefore it is my pleasure to present to you…
…the early years!

RIBS: 1st Anniversary Mix - Something Old, Something New…

Something Old, Something New…
Here are parts 1 & 2 of my 4-part 1st Blogaversary celebration mix. Decided to do a take-off on the old wedding tradition of: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”
Something Old:
Well, considering the occasion, this one is a nobrainer for me. I figured I’d resurrect and repost the very first mix I created, the one that got this whole thing started:
The First Mix: New York Groove (the link will take you to the original post from July, 2006, in case you’re interested in reading the [long] descriptive text I wrote back then)
We presented to you that week:
RIBS: New York Groove

Playlist:
- Bobbi Humphrey - Harlem River Drive
- Luther Vandross - Nights In Harlem
- Tom Browne - Funkin’ For Jamaica (N.Y.)
- James Brown - Down And Out In New York City
- Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
- Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - New York, New York
- Stevie Wonder - Living For The City
- Bill Withers - Harlem
- George Benson - On Broadway
- Odyssey - Native New Yorker
- Glenn Frey - You Belong To The City
- Quincy Jones - Summer In The City
- Bobbi Humphrey - New York Times
- Michael Lington - Harlem Nocturne
- Christopher Cross - Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)
- Oleta Adams - New York State Of Mind
This first mix established a trend that would become a staple of RIBS, the “theme mix”. These are some of the most enjoyable types of mixes to create, IMHO, and for a long time I had always wanted to do a mix centered around all of the great songs inspired by the “city that never sleeps”. So if you missed it the first time around (and that probably takes in just about all of you {smile}) here it is again.
Something New:
For the “something new” I went to the cubbard where I keep all of my ‘jazz’ spices and I whipped up a little mix of my favorite jazz cuts, called, appropriately enough:
MY Favorite Jazz
RIBS: My Favorite Jazz

OK… two down, two to go for this 4-part blogaversary edition of RIBS. If luck is with me, part 3 should be up sometime tomorrow morning. But, since Murphy (as in Murphy’s Law {smile}) is usually my co-pilot, it’ll probably be more like Saturday morning. In either case…
Enjoy!
No TPTD Today, Cooking Up Something Special…
Sorry to announce that there will be no RIBS Triple Play Thurs-Day mix posted today. But, I do have something cooking in the RIBS kitchen that is almost ready to be served…
See, today is the 1st Blogaversary of my main blog site, NetInfoWeb.com. So I’ve been working feverishly to cook up a special batch of mixes for you to celebrate the occasion. Of course, as luck would have it, it’s not quite ready to take out of the oven just yet.
Check back later this morning and we should be good to go!
