RIBS TPTD: “Trouble Man”, “Renaissance”, “First Take”

Decided to do something slightly different with the mix this week. Instead of just choosing three artists for the list, we take the process one step further and focus on one particular album from those artists.

You know how some albums (yeah, yeah I know, they’re CDs now; well I’m “old school” and I still call them “albums”) are just ’special’ for one reason or another. You like every song and listen to the whole thing all the way through every time you play it. Or it could be the first (or last) release by the artist, or there are changes in the makeup of the group, etc. Something, for some reason, makes that particular album significant and stand out from all the rest.

So, for a TPTD change of pace, this time around we have the albums taking center stage this week as we present to you:

Trouble Man “Trouble Man”, the movie soundtrack by Marvin Gaye

Renaissance “Renaissance”, The Miracles’ first post-Smokey release

First Take “First Take”, the debut album from MFSB

  2. First you start out with T Plays It Cool, but even better, what I like best is that you have MFSB in there along with The Miracles. I’ve NEVER heard any of The Miracles before so that just makes my day….and of course, MFSB never got all the props they deserve. You make Throwback Thursdays good for even us overworked people!

  4. All of these songs and albums you have listed as Smokey Robinson records..are in fasact Billy Griffin and the Miracles compositions and releases. Any Albums and or singles.1972 to 1978 done by the Miracles….
Love Machine, Do It Baby , Don’tcha Love It etc are billy Griffin performances.

  6. Billy, first of all “Thank you” for stopping by and leaving a comment. Always enjoy it when folks take the time to leave one.

Please take a look again. Even though I didn’t explicitly state that “Billy Griffin” was the lead on the “Renaissance” release (although now that you point it out I should have {smile}), the text next to the album cover does say, “first post-Smokey release”. I That is what is so special about this album for me. You right stepped into the lead role with the group and didn’t miss a beat. AAMOF, this album contains some of my favorite performances by the Miracles. IMHO, “I Love You Secretly” is worth the price of the disc all by itself, let alone “Nowhere To Go” and “I Didn’t Realize That The Show Was Over”.

Hmmmm… now that I think of it, a feature on the “Billy Griffin” era of the Miracles might be a nice mix to put together for the site in the near future!
