RIBS TPTD: “Double Triple”-The Stylistics, The Main Ingredient, Phyllis Hyman…
Ever start cooking a favorite recipe, like a cake, but you have 1001 things on your mind. You’re trying to find all of the right spices and other ingredients for the cake, the NBA Finals game is on the TV in the kitchen, the final episode of the Sopranos is on the TV in the other room, you got a little jazz going on the radio (the sound on the TV is off, of course), that damn cell phone keeps ringing (just when you start doing something, right?)… and you end up putting way too much baking soda in the cake batter! Damn!
Now to fix it you can try to add a little bit of this spice here and a little bit of that spice there to balance things off. However, you know from past experience that the only thing you CAN do to make this thing come out tasting just right is that you have to double up on all of the other ingredients. And you end up with TWO cakes instead of just one.
Well… that’s kinda what happened with this week’s mix. But then again, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anybody complaining about getting two cakes, especially when they were expecting only one.
So, this week we have the “accidental” Double Triple and present to you:
Since this ‘DT’ wasn’t really planned per say, there is no Funky mix/Mellow mix combination like the inaugural Double Triple mix I did for the Memorial Day weekend. Nope, just two mixes of that “sweet, soul music” by three artists that have provided the background music to many a memorable moment (or two) from my youthful days and have a firm foothold in The Soundtrack Of My Life.
Both playlists have a mix of tempos, neither one is all fast nor all slow. However, as you might expect from this trio, the overall tempo leans more towards the mellow, easy listening side of things. I especially, like the last four songs that finish up the Part 1 mix: “You Are Everything”, “Summer Breeze”, “Meet Me On The Moon” (my favorite PH song!) and “People Make The World Go Round”. As I like to say here at Rhythms In Black Satin, “Music Never Felt Soooo Good!”
Enjoy!

[...] The Triple Play Thurs-Day mix is now out of the oven, on the buffet table and ready for your consumption. Although I really didn’t plan on it when I started, this week’s mix turned out to be a “Double Triple”, two full playlists of sweet, soul music by two classic soul groups and one of the most beautiful (both physically and vocally) divas of her era that, unfortunately, met a tragic end at too young of an age. Our featured trio this week: [...]
