RIBS TPTD: “Queens Of Soul”
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
If you’ve been stopping by the main site, NetInfoWeb 2.0, you know that I have dubbed March ‘Soul Diva’ month because three of the top 10 (IMHO) female soul legends celebrate birthdays this month. Well, it is only fitting that this week’s Triple PlayThurs-Day is presented in honor of:
- Her Majesty, the ‘Queen of Soul’, Aretha Franklin,
- the ‘Queen of Motown’, Diana Ross, and
- the legendary, soulful voice that can only be, Chaka Khan
Aretha starts us off by taking us to “chuuch” with my favorite gospel tune by her, Oh Mary, Don’t You Weep, as well as contributing a beautiful gospel rendition of Someday We’ll All Be Free, a blues number, Today I Sing The Blues and, Sparkle and Hooked On Your Love from the movie soundtrack among her selections.
For Diana I went with some of her top songs from her solo days in Touch Me In The Morning and Love Hangover (both personal favorites), her final release with the Supremes, Someday We’ll Be Together, as well as displaying her jazzy side with All Of Me (from “Lady Sings the Blues”).
Chaka’s selections in this mix are the most diverse. While there is the familiar (and beautiful) Sweet Thing from her days with Rufus, I wanted to showcase her versatility by including the jazz numbers All Of Me and Don’t Go To Strangers, her vocal work on Bob Baldwin’s jazz cover version of Funkin’ For Jamaica, and the theme from the James Bond movie, Goldfinger.
Enjoy…

RIBS Bonus Mix: “Happy Birthday, Chaka!”…
Yesterday (Friday, March 23) was the ‘birth celebration day’ of Chaka Khan. Easily (IMHO) one of the top 5 Soul/R&B ‘divas’ of all time, she’s always been one of my favorite singers through my many years of listening to music. And I am sure that many of you out there feel the same.
Well… since we’ve had quite a few of our Soul and R&B entertainers leaving us lately, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to celebrate one of our favorite singers while they are still alive, healthy and around to appreciate our appreciation! (man, I hope my old English teacher isn’t around to read that last sentence {smile}). Anyway, I present for your listening enjoyment, a special, bonus playlist on the site this week…

RIBS TPTD: “Wonder, Charles & Benson”
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Dropping this a little later than expected, but better late than not at all, right? Installment #3 of Triple Play Thurs-Day is [finally] here!
This week we turn our attention to selections from three masters of Soul, R&B and Jazz:
- the genius of Steveland Morris, better known to all as Stevie Wonder,
- the unique versatility of Ray Charles, and
- the Jazz guitar and smooth vocals of George Benson
As I always attempt to do with the mixes posted here, I have tried to stay away from the very popular and more familiar songs from these artists (for the most part) and give you a sampling of songs that you may not have heard in a long while (or only hear infrequently) and some things that you didn’t even know they had recorded. Overall, what I hope I have achieved is a nice flow from song to song and artist to artist. You might consider it an “enjoyable feast to sooth your aural appetite”!
Enjoy…

RIBS SundaySoul: “Uptown”…
Filed under: Funk, R&B, SundaySoul, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Now that Triple Play Thurs-Day is well under way, I needed to figure out what I was going to do with all of the other non-TPTD playlists I have floating around in my head. Thus was born ‘SundaySoul’!
On SundaySoul I’ll present you with different mixes that usually will contain a variety of artists, although once in a while I just might devote the entire playlist to one specific singer or group. Additionally, I just want to say right at the outset that SundaySoul will most likely *not* be a weekly feature of the site. That honor goes to the TPTD mixes on Thursdays. I do have mixes lined up and ready to go for the next couple of Sundays but after that it will probably be once every couple of weeks or every 3 weeks. We’ll see how it goes and how the creative juices flow {smile}.
OK… for this very first SundaySoul I needed something fast, something uptempo. Let me take you back to the late 70s/early 80s with some disco sounds and some foot tappin’ R&B that we used to party to all night long at places like The Garage, Studio 54, Leviticus and many other clubs of that ilk across the country. Let’s go…
…Uptown!

Welcome Back! I guess it looks like this thing might actually happen on a weekly basis after all, eh? {smile}
For the second installment of Triple Play Thurs-Day I present to you:
- the soul vocalizations of Donny Hathaway (and he played some pretty mean keyboards too!),
- the unmistakable Jazz melodies of Ramsey Lewis, and
- the sultry, vocal sensuality of Sade
I hope you really enjoy the TPTD mixes. If you have three artists you want to hear in a future Triple Play Thurs-Day, just drop the names off in a comment and I’ll see what I can do.

RIBS TPTD: “Masekela, McFerrin & Coltrane”
Filed under: R&B, Triple Play Thurs-Day, jazz, music, podcasts/mixes, soul
Welcome to the inaugural Triple Play Thurs-Day mix! This is the first of what I hope will be a long series of tasty treats that we cook up in the RIBS kitchen and present to you each week on Thursdays. The goal of the TPTD mix is simple: each week I’ll take three artists from the genres of Soul/R&B, Jazz, Blues, Gospel or Reggae, blend their music together, pop it in the oven and then serve it up for your musical consumption on Thursday morning.
For our first go round we have:
- the African Jazz rhythms of Hugh Masekela,
- the Jazz improvisations of Bobby McFerrin, and
- the classic Jazz intonations of sax master John Coltrane
At first glance, IMO, this is as unlikely a lineup as someone could ever imagine. But that someone did: at this time let me take a moment to give ‘props’ to my friend and co-worker Tyrone for coming up with the idea of mixing these three particular artists. Actually to be honest, TP (as I like to call him) gave me these last summer! That’s how long it has taken me to be able to work out a mix with these three that has a nice musical flow to it. OBTW… I would be remiss if I didn’t throw in a little shameless plug for my boy: Tyrone has one of the best DJ businesses in the area (New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania/Washington DC). For weddings, dinner parties, retirement parties, corporate functions check out Super Sounds Entertainment. As they say, “You can pay more, but you can’t buy better”.
OK, now back to our regularly scheduled programming {smile}…
Nice, jazzy, melodic, smooth… and a little different. I present to you
